  1. About theBiotech Industry A North Carolina Biotechnology Center survey shows that 70% of biomanufacturing workers are trained at the Community College level. There are about 150 biotechnology companies in North Carolina employing 18,500 people. The revenue from these companies is $3 billion, nearly a tenth of the biotechnology industry revenue for the entire United States. Biotechnology is a fast growing field. North Carolina is expected to have 40,000 new biotechnology-related jobs by 2013 and 125,000 by 2023. North Carolina is the third largest biotechnology state in the country (Ernst and Young, 2004) and the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area is the third largest biotech metro region (Milken Biotech Index, 2004)

  4. What educational path should I choose? • BioWork:a 128 hour program that will introduce you to the industry and prepare you to become a certified process technician. • Bioprocessing in the Work PlaceSM I & II:Each 64 hour class will give you a more in depth look into bioprocessing and will teach the skills you need to start a successful career in this growing field. • AAS Degree and the 1+1 program:You can earn a 2 year degree in biotechnology. Does your local community college offer biotech classes? See if they have a 1+1 program! Take your first year of general education classes at your home college and then finish out your degree with biotech classes at a community college with an approved biotech program. • BS Degree and the 2+2 program: With an AAS in Biotechnology, you can transfer your hours to an approved BS program at some of the University of North Carolina Systemschools.
