Top Priorities for HiOOS What does your group want HiOOS to provide? • Marine and Coastal Solutions International: • open ocean aquaculture program/industry (currents, Eddys, wind) • HIHWNMS: • know ecosystems info to access the aquaculture info • Community-based component to engage groups • Where vessel traffic is & where whale density is to reduce residential impact

Top Priorities for HiOOS Cont. • State Civil Defense: • wind design, modeling, and topographic effects on homes & shelters (willing to share info) – SCD • LIDAR Info: inundation studies (info x-change) • SCD can provide some funding support (NOAA & STATE) • water quality monitoring after storms • need to pursue support from State Legislature w/strategy and plan • County of Hawaii Planning Department: • coastal hazard mitigation info • erosion along cliffs, subsidence, erosion rates • long term water quality trends

Top Priorities for HiOOS Cont. • Marine and Coastal Solutions International: • Coastal Landowners: Water Quality data for SMAs (making data available) • Malama Kai Foundation: Guide books to learn about dive sites to learn about buoy – opportunity to educate stakeholders • West HI regional fishery management area: use HiOOS products to train community • Info on temperature/depth and currents in area of pipeline • Data limitation stated up front and reflected on website • Hawaii County Fire Department: • Search and Rescue Perspective: to understand local currents around islands • Ocean Safety Perspective: assess beaches around state

Top Priorities for HiOOS Cont. • HIMB: • assessable data for problem-based learning modules (real time data) • Beneficial to hotels and tour operators – can be part of educational opportunity • Offer tutorial on how to utilize data sets & thematic areas on how to use and access data • Bishop Museum: • Working with USGS (PBIN) – integration of geospatial data sets • Need to build appreciation & support

Top Priorities for HiOOS Cont. • Sea Grant: • Science – policy interface (whole array of things, 2-way) • Organizing product sets & websites • Industry specific data sets to address needs/built into implementation plan • archiving data sets: coral reef monitoring, fish larvae surveys, toxic algal blooms, boxed jellyfish • land use patterns in coastal zone & advanced planning • emphasis on visual products for metadata display (goal for DMAC) • uniform presentation • Management issues: how to keep it going, prioritization, performance & assessment

7. Top Priorities for HiOOS Cont. • UH Dept of Oceanography: • Tailor websites to better clientele (e.g. Widgets) • Take advantage of physical modeling & combined w/water quality data • Mechanical to deal with very near shore water quality (jet skis) • Lifeguards at beaches?

What group can provide to HiOOS • Or, what does the group have available to share with other stakeholders? • Marine and Coastal Solutions International: • coastal landowners: water quality data provided to county • Superferry could be another source of data and user • Open ocean aquaculture platform • Reef Talk: HiOOS presentation & broadcast on local Tv/Hanauma By • Data source

What group can provide to HiOOS Cont. • Waikiki Aquarium & Bishop Museum: • Venue for outreach • HIMB: • research data, developing, & designing tools & venue for outreach • Kaneohe Bay’s regional council – discusses location issues (possible outreach) • Bishop Museum: • Provide info on specimens (date, time, location) • Provide consistent list of species names • County of Hawaii Planning Department • Public outreach – community development plans • Hilo Bay Watershed Water Group: can provide presentations

10. What group can provide to HiOOS Cont. • Hawaii County Fire Department: • Provide real-time data & verification for hazards • Provide real-time warning systems for high surf, hurricanes, etc • HIHWNMS: • Provide info on marine mammal locations (not real-time) • Sea Grant: • Network capability for engagement w/local sea grant programs & sharing of info on lessons learned • Sea Grant: Science Policy interest & improve mgmt capability • Partnership building role • NSGO: Relationship w/other organizations & industries at national level, partnerships w/ private sector • NELHA: data producer & educational mission

11. Types of Involvement With respect to data (user, provider), governance, etc. • Wakiki Aquarium: • can provide dedicated room/space for the HiOOS Outreach • Marine and Coastal Solutions International: • organizations of resorts to provide space for terminals (education outreach) • Marine Science Center on Kona as a venue for outreach (keep private sector involved) • Governance structure to include neighbor islands

12. Types of Involvement Cont. • Hawaii State Civil Defense: • need to form core group to participate & strategize through partnerships – Civil Defense would take part in this group • Prelude to formation of 501 C-3 • incorporate support from partners for a concerted effort (include local counties) • buy in from state gov. • Bishop Museum: • Offer museum as a venue for exhibits • IOOS: • Use other obs. success stories to implement HiOOS

13. Additional Topics or Issues • Financing: diversity funding-base • Competitive funding  contractual basis • Need core funding base to keep operations going for highest priority data sets • Group to advocate for program (Stakeholders) – mobilize when time is right • NOAA IOOS: work w/regions to get help w/funding questions • Pacific Disaster Center: use as a model for sustained funding? • Engaging public support – community based NGOs to offer cultural perspectives and needs • Use HiOOS as vehicle to track implementation of ORMP
