TOMKEN RD – M.S.Mississauga – Murray Speers All grade 6-7-8 intramurals are co-ed INTRAMURAL LEAGUES LEAGUE DATE Indoor Soccer Sept- Oct Flag Football Sept-Oct Volleyball Nov – Dec 3 vs 3 Basketball Jan – Feb T.B.H.L. & Handball Mar – June 3 Pitch Baseball April – June Overlap works because grade 6, 7, 8 have designated days for their program and they have gyms in two schools. At Tomken Rd. intramurals come before school teams for gym time. SPECIAL EVENTS INCLUDE: Fall Classic Fun-Run, Table Tennis Tournament, NBA 2 Ball, T.B.H.L. Showdown, Jump Rope
September Ultimate Football October Volleyball November Volleyball/Dodgeball December Dodgeball January Basketball (3 on 3) February Gladiators March European Handball April Tchoukball May-June Survivor (4-8) Every Friday is Tournament Day for K- 8. Primary Juniors run 2 breaks a week each with Low Org Games led by Student Leadership group. Gladiators is a competition were the Leadership students are the Gladiators. They take on names and each day there is a new challenge for the student. Some are individual (head to head competitions) and some are more like obstacle course challenges with Galdiator obstacles. Survivor starts with close to 400 students from 4 - 8 in teams and eliminate by votes for losing teams. I keep eliminating until I have one sole SURVIVOR!! BEACHBURG P.S.Pembroke – Nancy Crago Sept / Oct - flag football/running club (Turkey Trot - students try to guess how long it takes them to do a lap of the field), Terry Fox falls here as well so anything along that theme... Nov – volleyball, primary blanket volleyball and nukum volleyball Dec - usually do a variety of things in Dec, like coop games/noodle games/ smaller space games Jan - Cosum hockey (this is the biggest hit at our school), also do a double elimination schlockey tourney Feb - Dodgeball (no teams, usually split grades 3/4/5, and 6-8) March/April - basketball, 2 Ball tourney, speed stacking events April - Soccer, also do a double elimination badminton tourney, Turn Off the TV week also usually falls here, and I keep the gym open for the week after school 1 hour (for grades P), and 3 nights for 1 hour for J/I grades May/ June - softball, also did whippet last year for my first time, also have done rugby ... Jump Rope for Heart falls here, so I often run random jump things
C.H. Norton P.S. – Burlington There are several keys to the successful implementation of the intramural program at C.H. Norton School. The single most important contributing factor is that students enjoy being a part of the atmosphere. Staff – having a large staff is very helpful in terms of each one of us taking on different roles to assist in the monthly activities. While one key teacher oversees the year, many hands make for lighter work.Students – all students are given opportunities for participation as well as leadership. Students will often be seen asking staff how they can be involved in the activities. It has become a natural part of the program to see younger students with clipboards keeping score or just being there to encourage primary students as they participate in the activities.Administration – the support of the Principal and Vice Principal is also crucial to the success of the program. Many times the two of them will be seen engaged with the students in games and this always draws excitement!Balance of games and activities – providing a balance ensures that there is success for all students who come to participate. At times, it is important to incorporate higher skilled games such as hockey in order to elevate and showcase the strengths of some students.
CH Norton (cont.) Organization – intramurals are much more successful when the students are included as part of teams instead of a “drop in” organization. Being part of a team gives the students the incentive to believe in the team and makes them accountable for attendance purposes. Therefore, once the activities are decided upon, staff will ensure that one key staff member receives the list of students who have an interest in participating. At this point they are all included on teams and cross-referenced by the homeroom teacher to ensure no one is left out. Promotion – our school is keen on having high profile announcements that build on the success of the activities. For example, there are weekly (or even daily) announcements that will give the rest of the school feedback on the excitement of the previous activities. When we are preparing for new house leagues, we spend a considerable amount of time having music and “guest” speakers on the PA to promote the upcoming FUN.

PHE CANADA INTRAMURALOGY This introductory resource is for you, the organizers who are interested in providing intramural programs at your school or community recreation facility. At school, most often it is Physical Education teachers and athletics staff coordinators who meet the challenge of developing and implementing intramural programs. However, more and more often other staff, parent volunteers and student leaders are becoming involved in providing increased physical activity opportunities and fun! This resource sets out to quickly orient and introduce the reader to the many experiences for students and the components of an intramural program. This guide will help you design and launch a new intramural program, or enhance an existing program.
The benefits of intramurals are numerous, ranging from increasing the physical activity level of our kids to improving their sense of self esteem and self worth. Quality intramural programs also help schools develop a more positive, safe and dynamic school environment.
