    10. Afghanistan was established in 1747. It is located in Southern Asia, North and West of Pakistan and East of Iran. It is 647,500 sq. km. And is slightly smaller than the state of Texas. Landlocked, Afghanistan has an arid to semiarid climate with cold winters and hot summers. The terrain is mostly rugged mountains with plains in the North and Southwest. Natural resources include natural gas, petroleum, minerals, precious and semi-precious stones. Natural hazards include earthquakes, floods, and droughts. Afghanistan’s population is approximately 26,813,057 people (July 2001 est.) Included within that are various ethnic groups: Pashtun is 38%, Tajik is 25%, Hazara is 19%, and minor ethnic groups range from 6% - 12%. The economy is very poor and is based on farming and pastoral practices. Conditions have been worsened by drought, natural disasters, and war. Afghanistan is composed of factions delineated by religious and ethnic identity. The culture of Afghanistan reflects its ancient roots and position as a crossroads for invading ethnic groups and traditions.
