What is telework? • Work at home? • For how much time? • Using which technologies? • Is it eWork or eMobility? • What isn’t it?..... • It is not eNdemic, or even eXtensive • It is not eAsy to eValuate www.eurescom.de/e-living © e-Living Consortium, 2003
Need a flexible classification to deal with flexible actuality but also differing approaches • Need to see how far forms of telework are consistent across occupations, countries, and time, to see if technology is re-ordering the way we work www.eurescom.de/e-living © e-Living Consortium, 2003
Types of teleworker in eLiving • People who do any work at home and use the internet to do so (Net Homeworkers, or “Networkers”) • People who do any work at home and use a PC to do so (PC Homeworkers) • People for whom a mobile is important for work but who are not internet or PC homeworkers (Mobile Users) www.eurescom.de/e-living © e-Living Consortium, 2003
Types of homeworker • People doing any work at home in normal work hours, not using a PC or the internet, and for whom the mobile is not important for work (Day Homeworkers) • As above but where undertaken in the evenings or at weekends (Overspill Workers) www.eurescom.de/e-living © e-Living Consortium, 2003
People who work at one or more workplaces – excluding the home (Workplace, or “Standard” Workers) Normal Workers www.eurescom.de/e-living © e-Living Consortium, 2003

Conclusions • No single type of teleworker • Place and technology define differences • Categories contain different types of people • Movement across categories over time but by specific types of people • Telework is more an occupational than a technology issue www.eurescom.de/e-living © e-Living Consortium, 2003
