Introduction • Partnership between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and China’s libraries • Design to offer Chinese librarians the opportunity to understand and investigate issues, challenges and solutions arising from the changing contexts and complexity of situations in society • Set up a platform for the communication and cooperation between the libraries of the two countries and provides excellent networking opportunities with the University’s faculty, librarians, students, and leaders in libraries • Design for Chinese librarians’ professional development by meeting their specific needs and tailored to those who aspire to play more significant leadership roles in their organizations • Aim to cultivate the leadership of the Chinese academic libraries and the capability to lead and innovate the Chinese libraries and information service in the 21st century
Form of Activities • Various forms of activities: Reports, Seminars, Discussions, Group projects and Field trips • Create a learning environment of stimulation, participation and intellectuals to help participants obtain a deeper understanding of library and information science in the U.S. and the world and to acquire the latest innovations in library and information science
Content Design • Main Topics: - American Library System Management and Operation (CARLI and ILLINET) - Case Studies of the Best Practices in American Libraries and Site Visits - Theories and Future of Library and Information Science - Trends and Challenges in the Development of Digital Library and Institutional Repository - The Impact of IT on LIS - Strategic Planning - American Culture, etc.
Content Design (Continued) • Topics Relevant to Library Management and Require Participants to Reside on Campus for Three Weeks • One Unique Feature of the Program: All Participants identify a project that explores the issues and questions raised during the Program. Participants will evaluate and design their projects applying the new knowledge and ideas they have gained. • Colorful Cultural Activities • No English Language Requirement; Translation Services for All Courses and Activities • Attend a Celebration Ceremony and Receive a Certificate Issued by the University
Program Length • Lasts Four Weeks • The First Three Weeks: Lectures, Site Visits and Field Trips • In the Fourth Week: Visit Libraries in Other Cities to Enhance Participants’ Learning and Understanding

Program Cost • A Minimum Number of 20 Participants • Program Fee Covers the First Three Weeks • Additional Visa Fees: J-1 Visa Processing Fee and Interview Costs • Additional Round Trip Airplane Tickets and the Fourth Week Visits in Other Cities
