Nate has been with Target AP for 14 years and has held various leadership positions at the store, district, group and regional levels. For the past several years, Nate has focused on investigations, leading teams designed to investigate all types of theft including a significant focus on organized retail crime. Nate has a bachelor’s degree in Criminology from the University of Northern Iowa and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University.

  4. Michael Draper, CFISenior Manager, Market InvestigationsJCPenney Mike Draper began working for JCPenney in 2007 as the market investigations manager. Prior to that, he held several positions within investigations including internal investigations specialist, supply chain investigations manager and organized retail crime investigations manager. Mike has a bachelor’s degree in Administration of Justice from Southern Illinois University. He also holds a Master’s of Computer Information Systems with a concentration in Information Security from Boston University. He is a certified forensic interviewer and is currently pursuing his certified forensics examiner and computer forensics certification.

As senior manager of loss prevention for distribution and manufacturing, he manages loss prevention and security for 11 distribution centers and 10 manufacturing plants, including more than 150 security/LP associates. In 2006, John was given the additional responsibility of creating and leading a program to combat organized retail crime against Publix. He is a Gulf War veteran and holds a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Business Management.

  8. If you are victims of ORC: • You have assets that a lot of people want (demand) • Your assets will bring enough income to the bad guys that its worth their risk • You have weaknesses that criminals have learned to exploit • Your company probably can’t afford the magnitude of loss

  9. What doesn’t work • Reactive, single dimensional approach • The repetition of crimes will cause serious hemorrhaging within your organization • You need the big picture to understand ORC • You will never get ahead of the bad guys

  10. What doesn’t work • Just filing a police report • Most ORC investigations are too big and complicated for law enforcement to understand without your help • Cross-jurisdictional lines • Many agencies can’t support the heavy demand of extra investigative time • Doing nothing (S.O.S.)

What will work… Some companies are fighting back by forming specialized investigative teams that: • Do the groundwork necessary to justify a strong law enforcement response • Work closely with law enforcement to penetrate the criminal organization and take out its leadership (head of the snake)
