  3. Granite Properties Family Intrusive Igneous rock Formed formed from magma inside the earth’s crust Distinctive features Tough, interlocking crystals Composed of feldspar and shiny quartz Colour Pink & White Both colours shine & sparkle Texture and granularity Granular, coarse-grained Location Mountains that have been caused by folding (e.g. Himalayas) Strengths & Weaknesses Resistant to physical weathering Crumbles when exposed to intense heat

  4. Locations of Granite in the UK • Granite forms some of the highest mountains in the world. Where can you find granite areas in the UK? • Mark and label these places on your map: • Dartmoor • Bodmin Moor • Land’s End • Grampian Hills • Scafell Pike • Galway Bay

  6. Granite • LAND USE • Granite areas are of limited value for farming due to too much acidity and surface water, but they provide: • Good terrain for grouse and for military training. • Good for reservoirs because they are impermeable (water can’t get through) • Tors and bogs are great tourist attractions

  7. Uses of Granite & China Clay (Kaolin) Write down the uses of granite and kaolin
