Objectives Step #1: Avoiding Test Panic Step #2: Predicting, Practicing, Study Groups Step #3: The Test! Step #4: LASSI
Step #1: Avoiding Test Panic • Put all tests in your time scheduler. • Use a “To-Do List” every day. • Adopt a 5-Day Study Plan for all courses and tests. 2
Step #2: Predict, Practice, Form Study Groups • http://www.measureup.com/catalog/path.aspx?vid=18 NCLEX practice tests. • http://www.iue.edu/tutor/Tutorial%20Services%20Webpages/cai_front_page.html#NURSING%20TEST%20TAKING%20SOFTWAREA list of software used at Indiana University East for nursing students.
Step #3: THE TEST! • Do the easy ones first. Anticipate the answer. • Go through the answers a second time and check for the verbs and nouns. • Go through the answers a final time and change them if you have a good reason.

Step #4: LASSI • Check the scores on your LASSI, especially the ANX, TMT, and TST scales. • Answer these questions: • What is your analysis of the skills you have? • What do you want to improve on? • What strategies are you going to use to do this?
In Minnesota, if both parties are agreeable to a divorce, the paper which states the division of property, custody of children, and child support is called a: A. Affidavit B. Stipulation C. Identity petition D. Abstinence notice
Words after the word “a” must be followed by a word beginning in a consonant letter. Therefore, “stipulation” is the correct answer. A. Affidavit B. Stipulation C. Identity petition D. abstinence notice
If the word was “an,” then a word beginning with a vowel would be used. A,C,&D would be possible answers in this instance. A. Affidavit B. Stipulation C. Identity petition D. Abstinence notice
The subject and verb must also agree as to singular and plural. This is another grammar clue. The following test item is an example.
The biological requirements of a city include: A. Water B. Water and shelter C. Shelter D. Education
The verb “include” and the noun “requirements” tip you off that the answer has to be plural. Therefore “B” is the best answer. A. Water B. Water and shelter C. Shelter D. Education
Assistance with grammar clues does not occur that often. Instructors often put “a/an” at the end of a sentence so that you cannot tell. However, if it does work, take the points!
You should analyze each test for each course, however, to determine if this test tip is a valid one. It does not work all of the time.
There are specific words that can signal a possible answer. • These are words that allow for exceptions. • Examples are: most, generally, may, sometimes, usually, some, can, few, often, occasionally, many, frequently, probably.
Why are gene mutations in an individual usually not noticed? A. The normal gene from the other parent usually masks the mutated gene. B. The individual becomes adapted to the mutated gene. C. Individuals with mutated genes always die before birth. D. “Counter mutation” genes fix the damage caused by the mutated genes.
The correct answer is “A” which contains the word “usually.” A. The normal gene from the other parent usually masks the mutated gene. B. The individual becomes adapted to the mutated gene. C. Individuals with mutated genes always die before birth. D. “Counter mutation” genes fix the damage caused by the mutated genes.
There are also specific words that can signal an incorrect choice. • These words allow for NO exceptions. • Examples are: only, always, never, all, every, insures, without a doubt.
Why do fish often die in winter in a eutropic lake? A. Toxic chemicals always are activated by cold water.B. Lack of oxygenC. Too many disease organisms.D. Lack of sunshine vitamins.
The correct answer is “B.” This tip does not give you a specific clue to the correct answer. You MUST know the information. A. Toxic chemicals always are activated by cold water.B. Lack of oxygenC. Too many disease organisms.D. Lack of sunshine vitamins.
However, you can make a pretty good guess that option “A” would not be correct because of the word, “always.” A. Toxic chemicals always are activated by cold water. B. Lack of oxygen. C. Too many disease organisms. D. Lack of sunshine vitamins.
Test questions with the words NOT or EXCEPT: • These need to be read carefully to insure that you get the full meaning of the question. • Take the following example:
A forest’s carrying capacity for moose is increased by all of the following EXCEPT: A. Logging B. Fires C. Meadows D. Deer ticks
You must know the information to get this answer correct. However, so that you understand what is being asked, you need to read the question carefully. A. Logging B. Fires C. Meadows D. Deer ticks
