Technology at the School of Dental Medicine Orientation 2010
Welcome • Who we are: • Clinical Systems Administrator • Andrew Rukovena • PC Support Specialists • Grace Vibbert • Dan Thompson • Instructional Media Specialist • Tom Cotter
Your Computer Password • Why this Password is important • Why have two accounts? • To change your Administrator password: • Go to “Start” and select “Control Panel” • Select “User Accounts” • Click on “Administrator” • Click “Change Password” • You may also want to rename the Administrator account
GoodPasswords • Are not based on a dictionary word • Does not contain your name or user id • Is long – we recommend at least 15 characters! • To make an easy to remember password that is unique try one of these suggestions: • Inserting numbers instead of letters for example: “hello world” becomes "h3ll0 w0r1d!” • Using a pass phrase instead of a pass word. For example “This is my really Really loooong password!” is actually a good password, even though it uses dictionary words. • Interlacing words, for example taking “Teeth” and “2010” becomes “T2e0e1t0h”
Your Network ID • Your Case Network ID (abc123) is used to log on to school computers (such as those in the clinic and computer lab), for your email and for a host of other services. • Software Center • Student Information on-line and campus directory • VPN and Library Resources • Webmail.case.edu and webcalendar.case.edu • If you have not activated your Network ID yet, do so by going to: https://its-services.case.edu/my-case-identity/activate/ • Instructions on setting up email are on the Help Desk site
WirelessNetworking Note: the computer will take longer to boot up when the Wireless card is on, so you may want to leave the wireless turned off when not in use. • Turn on Wireless card by using the button on the left side of the tablet • If you look, you will probably see an icon similar to this near your clock. • Right-click on the computer icon and choose “View Available Wireless Networks” • You may need to click “Refresh network list” and you will see the Case Guest Wireless network. Click “Connect” • You might get an error pop up saying that it is not a secure network, click “Connect Anyway”
VPN • Virtual Private Networking (VPN) makes your network connection on wireless or off campus more secure, it also allows you to access campus-only resources like the University Directory. • We installed the Cisco Systems VPN Client on your computer. • If you do not see the “CaseVPN” Connection Entry when you open VPN, You need to install a configuration file (available on http://help.case.edu/connect/vpn/ ) • To connect, open the VPN client and click “Connect” • You may need to type ‘vpn.case.edu’ in the connect to box • VPN will not work on the Wired Network (which is already secure!) • VPN May disconnect if your computer “Sleeps”
WiredNetworking • Faster, more stable and secure than wireless • Need a network cable (Called a UTP or Cat 5 cable, looks like a wide phone jack) and active faceplate to plug into. • Need to register your network card the first time you connect by opening web browser, or going to http://setup.case.edu manually
Updates andScans • Anti-Spyware and Adware • Make sure you have and use an Anti-Spyware program regularly to scan your computer for Spyware. Spybot Search & Destroy and MalwareBytes are free programs we recommend • Windows/Microsoft Update • Should be done regularly, either by clicking on the shield icon by your clock or by going to http://update.microsoft.com • Symantec Live Update • Update your Virus protection at least once a month! Open Symantec by clicking on the yellow shield by your clock, click “Live Update” • Office Update • Available from http://office.microsoft.com
SafeComputing • We highly recommend you purchase and use a laptop security cable, and don’t leave your computer unattended! Laptop theft is a problem on this campus. • Use an Alternative Web Browser or Email program • Perform regular back ups • Create a Restore Image • Avoid problem programs like bitTorrent, WebBug, or BonsaiBuddy
Getting Help • The Help Desk: • http://help.case.edu • The walk-in centers in Sears Building and Bellflower Hall and available by phone 24/7 at 368-HELP (368-4357) • HP Hardware Support • http://www.hp.com/support or • call the Customer Care Center at 800-474-6836. • Your tablet has a 4 year warrantee (1 year on the battery)
