What is hyperthyroidism? Hyperthyroidism refers to an overproduction of the thyroid hormone. Symptoms include heart palpitations, intolerance to heat, insomnia, and a staring gaze. An enlarged thyroid is called a goiter.
What is hypothyroidism? Hypothyroidism refers to an underproduction of the thyroid hormone. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, and muscle cramps. Over five million Americans have this common condition.
Treatment for Thyroid Disease Hyperthyroidism can be treated with radioactive iodine, drugs designed to lower the amount of hormone that is released, or the surgical removal of the thyroid. Hypothyroidism can be treated by taking a daily thyroid hormone drug.
