  1. What Is Considered Domestic Violence In Rhode Island? Domestic violence can also be referred to as intimate partner violence. It is a pattern of behavior in a relationship used to gain power and control over a partner or spouse. This can include physical, sexual, economic, psychological, and emotional actions or threats to influence the other partner. Domestic violence includes behaviors that intimidate, frighten, manipulate, humiliate, injure, would, blame, or hurt the other partner. Domestic violence can happen to anyone of any sexual orientation, religion, gender, race, or age. It occurs within a relationship that is married, living together, or dating. It affects people of all educational levels and backgrounds. Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. Victims can be another relative, household members, or a child. This type of abuse is manifested as an abusive behavior pattern towards an intimate partner in a dating or family relationship. The abuser uses power and control over the victim and it can be mental, physical, sexual, or economic. The incidents are not usually isolated and escalate in severity and frequency. In some cases, domestic violence can result in serious physical injury or even death. Many people are not always aware they are being abused in their relationship. Some of the signs to look for in a relationship to identify if you are a victim of domestic violence is if your partner embarrasses you or makes fun of you in front of family and friends, puts down your accomplishments, or makes you feel as though you cannot make your own decisions. They use threats or intimidation to gain compliance, tell you that you are worthless without them, or treat you roughly, by grabbing, pinching, hitting, shoving, or pushing you. In some situations, the partner may use alcohol or drugs as an excuse to abuse the victim, blame you for their actuals, pressure you sexually for something you are not ready for, prevent you from doing what you want, keep you from leaving after a fight or making you feel you cannot escape the relationship. Victims of domestic violence tend to feel scared of how their partner will behave and make excuses to others for their partner's behavior. Many believe their partners can change if they change themselves and try not to do anything that will make their partner angry. Others stay with their partners as they are too afraid to leave. The most apparent forms of domestic violence include physical and sexual assaults or threats to commit them. They are actions that allow other people to become aware of the problem you are facing. Physical assaults may only occur once or now and then, they cause the victim to be fearful of any future events, and as a result, they allow the abuser to take control of their lives. Emotional domestic violence includes the undermining of the victim's sense of self-worth through criticism, belittling their abilities, calling them names, and verbal abuse. They can damage a partner's relationship with their children and stop them from seeing their family and friends.

  2. Psychological abuse, on the other hand, involves causing fear through threatening physical harm and intimidation. They can destroy property and pets, play mind games, and force isolation from friends, school, work, or family.
