  1. How does airport car parking work?

  2. Air travel was an expensive and not very popular mode of transport until very recently. In the earlier times, travellers were dropped, and parking was scant. It was later in the 1950s that paid parking lots and security and lighting were introduced. As more and more people started opting for air travel, parking lots became a vital part of the airport’s design. Their types were also diversified as the number of travellers increased.

  3. How many types of airport parking are there? To prevent people from worrying about car parking near me every time they drop off someone at the airport, here is a list of types of airport parking, along with a description of how it works. Here you go: Drop-off and pick-up zones: These zones are located close to the terminal and require curb space. Here, vehicles are parked for a short time, typically less than 15 minutes. The area is shared by private cars, limos, valets, shuttles, taxis, and ride-sharers like Uber. The dwell time, defined as the amount of time a vehicle is parked at the drop, is more at pick-up zones when compared with drop-off zones. Shuttles, taxis, and private vehicles typically take less time to unload luggage and share a curbside goodbye.

  4. Cellphone waiting Lots: A new addition to airport parking design, cell phone waiting lots are aimed to shorten vehicle dwell time in passenger pick-up zones. In this case, the cars wait for passengers at some distance from the airport. Then, as soon as the party disembarks and picks up bags, it texts the driver that they are ready for pick-up. The service is typically free and prevents cars from waiting at the curb. Short-term parking: Usually offered at a multi-level parking garage near the terminal, short-term car parking is provided at an hourly rate. The service is typically used by people who come to the airport to drop off their loved ones. Since airports are turning into more than just transfer points and have restaurants, services, or shops, making short-term parking affordable is in their best interest.

  5. On-site long-term parking: The parking is located in a remote space and allows travellers to leave their cars behind for the duration of their trip. Typically, this facility is used by business travellers who travel frequently and for a short period. The long-term parking lots also offer concierge services like car washing, detailing, oil change, and fill-up. In some places, this facility is also used by employees. Off-site long-term parking: This car parking facility is available near major airports and is run by companies that are not affiliated with the runway. The fee travellers have to pay for stationing their cars at these spaces is often cheaper than that of on-site parking spaces. Some off-site parking areas offer discounts to their members and provide to and from shuttle service to the airport.

  6. Car rental parking: Typically, airports operate in partnership with one or more car rental companies to offer rental options. They can be pre-booked. So, these are a few car parking options available at the airports.
