Forms of Purchase Specifications Standard specification Blue print or dimensioned drawing Chemical analysis & Physical characteristics report Materials/ method of manufacture Description of purpose or use Vendor sample Buyer sample Requirements of code of standards/ Quality standards
Standard specification Description of purpose intended for Commercial standards of specification Included with units of purchase Included with packing specifications Capable of being checked with acceptable testing methods Incorporated with Code of practice or International standards
Blue print or dimensioned drawing Easy method for checking against specification when item received Advisable as safe method for inspection
Chemical analysis & Physical characteristics Ideal for raw material procurement To conform metallic class / grade Can be accepted by laboratory test certificate
Materials / method of manufacture Often used in conjunction with inspection at vendors plant / workshop
Description of purpose or use Purchase of material or tools which are new to trades Where no particular knowledge about modern or latest equipment / machines
Vendor sample Suitable for purchase of basic ores/ metals Products of which quality is not readily measurable
Buyer sample Recommended only where no other type of specifications is possible Sample too often subject to change, loss or misinterpretation Where adequate record of purchase is available for reference

Example of Blue print or dimensioned drawing • Civil construction or building structures • User defined equipments • Tailor made machines • Fabricated structures
Example of Chemical analysis & Physical characteristics For raw materials like metal sections For chains and wire ropes used in material handling/ lifting
Example of Materials / method of manufacture • For cutting tools HSS-Cobalt % • For spanners drop forged chrome vanadium steel • For hardness values in HRC • For pipes ERW or seamless • For sheets CRCA
Example of Description of purpose or use Trainers Simulators Experiment test rig
Example of Vendor sample Plastics Fuel-coal / coke chemical / lubricants leathers textile products involving colour
Example of Buyer sample Printed forms / certificates Machine parts / elements Maintenance spares
Example of Code of standards/Quality standards • BIS (formerly known as Indian standards Institution -ISI) • ISO • Safety standards • Environmental standards
