Prince William and Kate Middleton met in 2001. The pair met when the two were students at St. Andrews University. The first year everyone lived in a student dormitory after which they lived two years together in the city.
On 16 November 2010, Clarence House stated that Prince William was to marry Catherine Middleton "in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London". They were engaged in October 2010, while on a private holiday in Kenya; Prince William gave Middleton the same engagement ring that his father had given to William's mother, Diana, Princess of Wales an 18-carat white gold ring with a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire and 14 round diamonds.
On 5 January, St James's Palace publicized that the ceremony would start at 11:00 local time and that the bride would arrive at the abbey by car rather than by carriage (the latter is the traditional transport for royal brides). The route planned was along The Mall, through Horse Guards Parade, and down Whitehall to the abbey.

On 3 December 2012, St James's Palace announced that the Duchess was pregnant with her first child. The Duchess was admitted to St Mary's Hospital in London in the early stages of labour on the morning of 22 July 2013, and gave birth to a boy, weighing 8 pounds 6 ounces (3.80 kg), at 16:24 BST that day. On 24 July 2013, Kensington Palace announced that the baby would be named George Alexander Louis.
On 2 May 2015, at 08:34 BST, the Duchess gave birth to a girl weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces (3.71 kg). On 4 May 2015, Kensington Palace announced that the baby would be named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
