Web Browsers • A Web browser is a software application that runs on the PC to make it work as a Web client • Computers that contain files that are available through Internet connections are called Web servers • Web pages are comprised of HTML (HyperText Markup Language) instructions, text, images, sound, etc.

7. Navigating the web • Use the Refresh button on Internet Explorer to load the Web page that appears in the browser window again. Beware Caching! • Use the Stop button to abort a transfer when you accidentally click a hyperlink that you do not want to follow. • The browser stores the location of each page you visit during a single session in a history list. • Use the Back button and the Forward button to move through the history list.

9. Hyperlink Navigation Using the Mouse Click a hyperlink: Text that is a different color and underlined Images or Hotspots At new Web page, right-click on the Web page’s background. Click Back on the shortcut menu.

10. Uniform Resource Locator - URL • Each web page has a unique address called a URL • URL’s can be comprised of: Protocol://Host/Path/File.name Example: http://web.fccj.org/~rjanson/cgs1100/syllabus.doc

11. Host Identification • Host can be identified by an IP address or Domain name • IP address: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (ex. 207.203.47.7) • Domain name: ….subsubdomain.subdomain.tld (ex. WWW.FCCJ.EDU)

Uniform Resource Locator - URL • Path is the directory/subdirectories where the web page is located on the host • Web page stored in a file with an extension (aka suffix) of HTML or HTM • File names consist of prefix.suffix (suffix also called extension) • MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions)

13. Entering a URL in the Address Bar • Type the URL of the location that you want to go to in the Address bar • Don’t have to enter the protocol anymore – why? • Try: 207.203.47.7 • Try: fccj.edu

Entering a URL in the Address Bar • Why doesn’t WWW.FCCJ.EDU need a WWW, path, and file name? • If no file name is specified the system looks for a file called index.htm (or html) • Try: web.fccj.org/~rjanson • If no index.htm file, on my host, a list of files is displayed • Try: web.fccj.org/~rjanson/cgs1100/

18. Changing the Default Home Page • Click tools on the menu bar and then click Internet Options • Click the General tab • You can specify the default page as: • the current page • a blank page • another page (by typing the URL of a Web page in the Address text box)

20. Printing a Web Page To print the current Web page: • Click the Print button on the Buttons toolbar to print with the default print settings. Or • Click File on the menu bar and then click Print. • Select the printer you want to use and indicate the pages you want to print and the number of copies. • Click the OK button.

24. Using IE to Save a Web Page • Open the Web page in Internet Explorer • Click File on the menu bar • Click Save as • Specify the drive and path to save to • Accept or change the default filename, but retain the extension .htm or .html • Click the Save button

27. Downloading and Uploading from WWW • Another method to move information over the Internet • Most browsers provide basic download function • Go to a web site directory listing • http://web.fccj.org/~rjanson/cgs1100/

30. Verifying Your Email Account and Web Space at FCCJ

32. If first time supply SSN and month/day of birthday (01/88) They will assign a user id (first four letters of last name followed by first and middle initials) John Quincy Adams= ADAMJQ (Or JQADAM – changes often)

38. It will look something like this. This verifies that you know your user id and password You now need to verify that your web site is active

39. Web Space at FCCJ More help on FTP The general format for the location of your web space is: students.fccj.edu/~xxxxx Where xxxxx is your user id

40. Verifying Your Website To verify that your Unix account (i.e. your website) is active: • Start the browser (I.e. Internet Explorer) • Enter the URL for your site: students.fccj.edu/~xxxxx/ (where xxxxx is your user id)

41. When you do not specify a file name in the URL (as above) your server searches for a file called index.htm. This default home page (index.htm) was created by FCCJ and placed on your web site. If the default page does not appear….

42. …and you get this “page can not be found” page. • One of the following is the cause: • You typed the URL incorrectly. • Make sure you used the correct case, forward slashes not back slashes, periods are in the right places, etc. • 2. Your account may be inactive. • Email the FCCJ helpdesk (helpdesk@fccj.edu) or call them (632-3151) & ask them to activate your Unix account. They will ask you for your user id and password. It will take about 30 minutes for the account to be reset.

File Transfer Protocol - FTP • A method to move files from one internet location to another • Need a FTP client application and access to a FTP server computer • FTP client app provides a GUI to: • “Logon on” to the server site • Find files on server and client • Transfer files • Example: WS_FTP

48. To install, double click the file
