B. Magyars & Muslims Attack • Magyars – Nomadic tribe that attacked Europe from the east • Did not settle on captured land, but caused damage and took slaves • Muslims – Attacked from the south • Muslims took over much of Spain
C. Results of Invasions • 1) Caused widespread disorder • 2) Europeans lived in constant fear • 3) People no longer looked to central figures for authority • 4) Creation of feudalism
D. Structure of Feudalism • Based on rights and obligations and the control of land • King – Top person in feudalism • Lord – Person who granted land (fief) to vassals in exchange for military protection
Vassal (Nobles) – Person who received land from lords • Knights – Mounted soldiers who pledge to defend their lord’s land • Serfs – Landless peasants who worked the lord’s land • Were not allowed to leave their lord’s land • Bound to the land but were not slaves

F. Manorial System • Manor – A lord’s estate • Basic economic arrangement of the Middle Ages • Lords provided serfs with housing, farmland, and protection
G. It’s a Small World • Most serfs never traveled more than 25 miles in their entire life • Manors were self-sufficient • Produced basically everything that was needed
H. Harshness of Life • Peasants were forced to pay high taxes to lords • Tithe – Church tax of 1/10th of one’s income • Life expectance was 35 • Serfs accepted their lives because they believed God determined one’s place in society
