History of Turntablism Although turntables were being used as musical instruments dating back to the 1930’s the modern art form was created back in the 1970’s with its roots stemming from hip hop culture. This has led DJing using turntables to be considered on of the four pillars of hip hop culture. PowerPoint 2007

  5. Different Forms of Turtablism • Break-beat: Switching between two identical records to extend the percussion break of a song • Scratching: Creating sounds by moving vinyl and cross fader on mixer • Beat-juggling: Manipulating two samples to create a unique sound PowerPoint 2007

  6. Turntable History The first phonograph (turntable) was created in the late 19th century by Thomas Edison. He did this by carving grooves into a being of tinfoil and then using a stylus to trace over these grooves creating sounds. PowerPoint 2007

  7. Modern Turntables The modern turntable was the dominant device to play recorded music until the 1980’s when the compact cassette emerged The two modern turntable designs are a belt drive system that is less expensive then its counterpart the direct drive system. PowerPoint 2007

  9. Direct Drive Turntables Advantages • Higher torque • Less distortion • Accelerated speed • More preferable for turntablism • Disadvantages • High vibrations • More expensive • Bigger motor required PowerPoint 2007

DJ Mixers The main component of turntablism is the mixer the tool that takes the sounds from the turntables and combines them to create a new sound The major difference with DJ mixers is the ability to redirect an input source to headphones Another unique factor is the cross fader which allows easy transitions between two sources PowerPoint 2007

Future of Turntablism Turntabilsm has evolved from its early roots in old school hip hop to dominating the music scene through its influence in rap and pop music This art form has become the most popular source of entertainment in clubs and has expanded into new genre’s all over the world The future of turntablism is limitless because its only limitations are people imaginations.
