  2. Pops of pastel Pastels don’t have to be sugary. Depending on the quantities used, pastel shades of blue, green, yellow, and pink can seem energizingly modern and work equally well in a baby boy's or baby girl's nursery. Consider painting woodwork, cabinet doors, and drawers in a variety of pastel hues to contrast with bright, white walls.

  3. Green on green The ideal hue for a baby's room should be green. It's calming enough to promote a restful night's sleep yet energetic enough to promote focus, making it ideal for when your child begins to learn to speak. To keep the colour scheme from becoming overly exciting, layer several shades of green into your walls, furniture, and accessories, utilising the most bright tones as highlights.

  4. Blue and white It's difficult to go wrong with this serene hue combination. It has a light, nautical atmosphere, but it looks equally at home in a city flat or a cottage by the sea. Choose a calming, pale blue that is still feminine enough for a little girl's room instead of a deep blue and white combination, which looks spectacular but is easier to get tired of over time.

  5. Red and blue This traditional combo looks wonderful as part of a vintage- themed scheme, complete with red and blue bunting. Hot red highlights in the woodwork, furnishings, and accessories will be countered with cool blue walls. Choose a blue that is chalky and will mix well with other colours as your child becomes a little older.

  6. Cosy neutrals An intelligent neutral strategy is timeless. Layering various textures, from woollen cushions and fluffy rugs to unpainted wooden furniture, will help your infant feel as cosy as possible. Paint one or more of the walls a rich, warm taupe colour for a cosier atmosphere.
