  1. Gas Guzzling?? David LaFevor, Joanie McEnery, Liz Cooper

  2. The Questions • What are the effects of the use of fossil fuels on the environment? • Why else should we care? • What is the level of awareness on campus about fuel efficiency, i.e. hybrid cars, alternative transport etc? • How much fuel do Rhodes students, faculty and administration use on a yearly basis? Whose cars are the most efficient? • What would students think about altering Campus Automobile Policy?

  3. Fossil Fuels and the Environment • Energy-related activities and automobile use are the primary sources of U.S. man-made greenhouse gas emissions, representing about 85 percent of the U.S. man-made total carbon-equivalent emissions in 1998.

  4. Why we should care. • Protect the Environment • Conserve Resources • Reduce Oil Imports (Dependence) • Save Money

  5. Student Survey • Amount of Students Interviewed: 22 • Types of Cars owned by students interviewed: • Dodge Durango • Nissan Maxima (2) • Mitsubishi Eclipse SpyderVolvo S40 • Lexus LS • Chevy Trailblazer • Toyota Corolla • Mercedes Benz 2.3 190E • Nissan Pathfinder • Ford Explorer • Toyota 4-Runner • Jeep Cherokee • Acura Integra • Nissan Altima • Jeep Grand Cherokee (2) • Nissan Xterra (2) • Ford Focus (2) • Ford Expedition

  9. Final Question

  10. Physical Plant Survey • 1. How long have you worked at the Rhodes Physical Plant? • 17 years • 2 months • 6 years • Have you seen much change in what they are doing to protect/preserve the environment? -”yes” -”It is always changing, everyday. . .the use of chemicals, planning. . .to preserve the integrity of campus” -”yes, a lot in the last few years”

  11. Survey Continued. . . • 3. What types of changes have there been? -”chemicals are 90% biodegradable, can control buildings with energy management” -”campus green, recycling cans/paper/glass, cleaning products are environmentally safe” • How do you feel about the implementation of Hybrid cars as standard Rhodes vehicles? -”sure, I would be in favor” -”I support it and I think one professor has one” • How do you think this would affect the campus as a whole? -”It would be beneficial to the image of Rhodes College” -”It could save money in the long run”

  12. The Numbers • Automobiles Registered at Rhodes: 3,827 • Average Miles Per Gallon: 19.9 • Average Yearly Fuel Cost: $1087.30 • Average Vehicle Output of Greenhouse Gases: 9.9 tons

  13. The Numbers

  14. Currently Available Hybrid/Electric Options • Advantages • 61 MPG City Driving • $ 2,000 Tax Deduction • 3.1 tons of Greenhouse Gas emissions (compared to average of about 10) • $363 per year fuel cost Honda Insight

  15. Conclusions • Although students seem to be aware of the negative affects of the use of fossil fuels, few seem to be willing to alter their current mode of transportation. • As a whole, the Rhodes community drives fuel inefficient cars; but there are significant numbers of fuel efficient vehicles on campus. • Hybrid cars are becoming a more and more attractive option due to a number of incentives and their increasing use on campus would not only be a positive influence on the community as a whole, but would actually save money in the long run.
