Developing a Nursing Research & Evidence-Based Practice Committee Nora Moti RN, MSN2005 - 2007
Interested in Nursing Research? • Nurses have a voice in your practice. • Fontana Nursing Research (NRC) Committee is dedicated • to supporting ongoing nursing research to establish Best • Practices that will promote and improve patient outcomes. • Our members recognize that research is the basis for • knowledge development. • Through nursing research, a scientific-based approach to • patient care has refined and improved nursing practice.
Characteristics of Nurses Interested in Research • Inquisitive, questioning mind • Creative thinker • The ability to move away from the status quo; always thinking of a better way • Genuine enthusiasm and patience • A sense of humor coupled with discipline to sustain a project through a long and arduous process • Clinical expertise and problem solving skills (Messmer, et al, 2002; Glass, 1999)
Success Factors • Issue/problem applies to nursing practice • Diverse committee composition • Clearly established goals • Group commitment/effort • Flexibility • Ability/willingness of members to fill essential roles • Communication with experts outside of the committee (Flemings, et al, 2003)
To evaluate and generate nursing knowledge (nursing research and evidence-based practice) to guide practice in order to improve patient outcomes. Mission Statement Facilitator Nora Moti Administrative Sponsor Kathy Christmas
Goals • Establish local research committee. • Integrate bedside nurse as an active participant in committee. • Increase awareness of medical center staff regarding nursing research, EBP, & web resources. • Assess and develop minimal competencies for committee members. • Implement regional nursing research utilization model. • Present at least one research/EBP project or an abstract/poster each year.
NRC goals, cont. • Attend annual So. Cal Regional EBP conference • Disseminate EBNP findings • Present research education • NRC annual newsletter • Submit a proposal for grant funding
NRC goals, cont. • Integrate evidence-based philosophy into routine nursing care • Increase the use of evidence in clinical practice • Form a NRC Journal Club • Participate in data collection and analysis
Ethics Training • HIPAA Researcher Training and Certification - All researchers must complete this one-time mandated HIPAA training. http://researchweb.lsrs.ca.kp.org/irb/irbtraining.html • Human Participant Protections Educationfor Research Teams http://cme.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials/learning/humanparticipant-protections.asp
IOWA Model • Fontana Nursing Research Committee utilizes the Iowa Model to develop Evidence Based Nursing Practices to be implemented at the bed side that ultimately improve outcomes of care. • Research utilization is done through staff education, poster presentations, and articles. • Planned change principles are considered when integrating research into practice.
1st Meeting • Team Charter developed (mission & goals) • Chair, Co-chair & Secretary (by nomination & election) • Ground Rules (CDM, IBPS, respect for others) • Member expectations 1) Literature searches (Fontana Library, Web-sites such as Pub Med, Cinahl) 2) Nursing research and EBP education for all members. Each committee member researched videos from Nursing Research Video Conference Series and presented to group. 3) LMP Training 4) Human Subject Ethics Training, HIPAA for research training 5) EBP evaluation form for critiquing
Video Presentations • What is Nursing Research? • Development of a Research Problem • Review of the Literature and Conceptual Frameworks • Research Aims/Purpose/Hypothesis • Qualitative Research Design • Quantitative Research Design
Video Presentations cont. • Sample & Sampling Decisions • Data Analysis • Research Utilization • How to write a research proposal • Data collection, reliability & validity
Identification of a problem based on current nursing knowledge and practice. Literature search for relevant information related to best practices. Evaluation of literature (scientific merit, validity, reliability) Disseminate new knowledge and interventions that are justified by the most valid evidence. Choosing an Evidence-Based Nursing Project to Improve Outcomes
Fontana NRC Projects • Medication Errors and Reporting • Peripheral IV Therapy (PIVT) • Alternatives to Restraints • A bio-behavioral tool to validate pain in non-verbal adults
Systemic Review of Nursing Research Model An Organizational culture that: • Supports nurses to value research. • Provides research activities. • Mentors staff nurses in research activities. (Fink, et al, 2005)
Strategies • Strong supportive leadership • Mentorship • Staff education regarding research and evidence based practice. • Time to conduct or use research • Routine performance expectations in research use (Fink, et al, 2005)
