Characteristics of Nurses Interested in Research • Inquisitive, questioning mind • Creative thinker • The ability to move away from the status quo; always thinking of a better way • Genuine enthusiasm and patience • A sense of humor coupled with discipline to sustain a project through a long and arduous process • Clinical expertise and problem solving skills (Messmer, et al, 2002; Glass, 1999)

Goals • Establish local research committee. • Integrate bedside nurse as an active participant in committee. • Increase awareness of medical center staff regarding nursing research, EBP, & web resources. • Assess and develop minimal competencies for committee members. • Implement regional nursing research utilization model. • Present at least one research/EBP project or an abstract/poster each year.

IOWA Model • Fontana Nursing Research Committee utilizes the Iowa Model to develop Evidence Based Nursing Practices to be implemented at the bed side that ultimately improve outcomes of care. • Research utilization is done through staff education, poster presentations, and articles. • Planned change principles are considered when integrating research into practice.
