  4. Graphical Organizers Convert complex and messy information collections into meaningful displays.

  5. They compress • They focus • They make interpretation, understanding and insight much easier

  6. They help keep students plan their research forays. • They guide the gathering. • They focus purpose. • They show what is gained. • They show what is still missing.

  7. They act like mind maps. • They point to the destination. • They identify related sites and sights.

  8. Sample lesson compare and contrast The World We Live in (Unit 14, Martial Arts)

  9. After studying the reading passage, the related vocabulary (from The ESL Miscellany) and grammar (Shenanigames ), students are divided into four groups. Each group chooses any two of the four Martial arts mentioned in the reading text.

  10. Regardless of the martial art each group of students chooses, they will all look at definition, history, and philosophy. • In class, students read a brief article about the two martial arts they chose (similar to one they studied in the reading text) and helped by the teacher fill in a compare and contrast organizer.

  11. Teacher distributes the following graphic organizers which is to be filled by the students

  12. They then spent the remainder of the period organizing notes from the two of their articles into one of the organizers.

  13. Feedback Groups write their plan using the following graphic organizer paying attention to: • Writing a topic sentence • Coherence and logical progression

  14. REVISION Groups revise their work They edit and write the last version

  15. Writing activity • Use PETRA 6 to find out a writing activity and design a suitable graphic organizer to teach the activity
