  2. About the Teacher • Born and lived in Germany until my freshman year in high school • Married with 3 children • Experience includes 3rd, 5th, Computer Lab (K-5th), and EIP (1st -5th Grade) • Starting my 11th year of teaching

  4. Binder • ** Comes home nightly • Organized By Dividers: • Holds Agenda • Character Card • Notes to and from school • Homework & Unfinished Work • 25 Book Challenge (Reading section) • Study Guides

  5. Agenda • Students record HW and info. daily • Homework listed • Important Reminders • Signed EVERY Night (if needed)

  6. Weekly Folder • Go home on Thursdays • Retuned the next school day (Friday) • Graded work, handouts, PTA info. (unless it is dated and requires attention BEFORE Thursday), etc..

  7. Character card • Documents Behavior & Work Habits • Every week begins with 100 pts • End of 9 weeks celebration • Needs Improvement given on report card if expectations aren’t met • Note in agenda if points are taken • One Homework Pass & Get out of Study Hall Pass

  8. Work Habits • Just as important as grades • O, S, or N on report card • Outstanding is earned, not given. It means consistently turns in class work and homework on time and complete. • Academic Awards WILL NOT be given to students who have an “N” in Work Habits or Behavior.

  9. Graded Work • Sent home every Thursday (in Weekly Folder) • Papers may have a letter grade, a comment, or simply a check/smiley face. • Anything below a “C” is to be signed and returned. C’s will have a sign & return, so you are aware of the C’s. • Progress reports sent home at 4 1/2 weeks

  10. Homework • Monday – Thursdays • Written in agenda daily • Usually math and one other subject • Studying for Unit tests • 25 Book Challenge • No Homework = Study Hall/Points Deducted on Character Card

  11. 25 Book Challenge • State Standard requirement • Reading Log located in Reading section of Binder • Read 2-4 AR chapter books each 9 weeks in different genres on their level & pass test • Requirements not met result in Needs Improvement on Report card under Work Habits • Other Novels read in class may be added to the reading log to meet the 25 books but are not a part of their 2-4 books each 9 weeks.

  13. Field Trips • Atlanta Symphony • All Day Trip to Amicalola Falls • Gem Mining • Wagon Ride • Hiking • Gold Mining • Cave Exploration

  14. Absences & Tardies • Make-up work will be sent up in the afternoons or when student returns • Not all work can be made up • Send in an excuse letter • After multiple absences a letter is sent home from the school/county. • Remember, excessive tardies have a negative impact on student acheivement

  15. Reading • Introduces genres each 9 weeks • Guided Reading (small groups based on your child’s reading levels) uses different reading strategies • UNRAAVEL (Reading passages) • 25 Book Challenge • **MUST PASS Reading ON CRCT

Writing/Grammar/Spelling • Words Their Way (Spelling Tests on Friday) • Writer’s Workshop Folder • Writes in variety of genres such as narrative, informational, persuasive, & response to literature • Take writing from meeting to exceeding with voice, ideas, organization, and conventions • Prepare for GA Writing Assessment in March.

  17. Math • Number Sense • Multiplication & Division of Decimals • Fractions & Algebra • Measurement • Geometry • Data Analysis • Math journals • Guided Math (Small groups based on skills level) • Timed Tests • ***MUST PASS MATH ON CRCT

  18. Science • Constructive & Destructive Forces • Matter • Electricity & Magnetism • Cells & Microorganisms • Classification of Organisms • Learning through hands-on experiments and investigations! • **4-H Program

  19. Social Studies • United States Government & Civics • Civil War &Reconstruction • American Immigration/Industry • World War I • The Great Depression • World War II • Post World War II • Geography Skills • Integrated Economics

Important Dates • Sept. 20th -24th : Week Off • Oct. 4th -11th : 3rd & 5th Iowa Testing • Oct. 18th – 24th: Conference Week • Nov. – Human Growth & Development • Dec. – Atlanta Symphony • Feb. 21st-25th: Week Off • Mar. 2nd: Writing Assessment • Apr. 12th – 21st : CRCT • Apr.   21. Volunteer in our Classroom! Room Moms We need a Room Mom…PLEASE! They will keep you up to date on class events. As events come up, the Room Mom will email you and ask for help!

  22. Other Info. • Birthday treats (please send in for lunch) • Snacks (donated community snacks for those that forget & are in a hurry) • Join PTA and sign up for their online newsletters. Support our school!

  23. Thank You... for taking the time to attend Open House! I look forward to working with you and your child this year. It is going to be a wonderful year filled with exciting learning activities!
