IBM Environmental Affairs Policy • Established in 1971 • Currently includes the following commitments to environmental affairs leadership in all its business activities: • Provide a safe and healthful workplace • Be an environmentally responsible neighbor • Conserve energy and natural resources • Deploy manufacturing processes that do not adversely affect the environment • Help develop solutions to environmental problems • Meet or exceed all government regulations and voluntary requirements to which IBM subscribes • Strive for continual improvement • Conduct rigorous audits and self-assessments Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
IBM Environmental Goals • Conservation • 3.5% annual energy conservation savings • 75% non-hazardous waste sent for recycling • Climate Change • Reduce CO2 emissions by 12% from 2005 to 2012 through: • Energy conservation • Renewable energy • Energy efficiency practices for use in all facilities globally Solar panels on IBM building in Austin, TX Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
Commercial office New Construction category 200 KSF, 90 acres 5-story, 44.5 KSF / floor Urban setting Completed: January 2002 Office Buildings – Owned Tivoli Systems – Austin, Texas LEED Certified Key Features: • "Smart Growth" Development Zone • Large areas of land left undisturbed • Planted native trees, minimized irrigation • Recycled >50% construction waste • "Energy Star" roof • Daylight and exterior views for all office areas Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
Office Buildings - Leased • In 2007 IBM initiated a collaborative effort with other major companies: • CitiGroup, Dupont, Fluor, Grubb & Ellis, Pitney Bowes, PWC, UTC, Wachovia • Developed checklist to determine which buildings under consideration for lease qualify as “green” • The checklist includes items under the following 4 categories: • Sustainable Site • Water Efficiency • Energy & Atmosphere • Materials & Resources • Mission • Promote the availability of competitively priced leased space that provides energy efficient and environmentally preferable attributes Hearst Tower, NYCLEED GoldSept 2006 Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
Data Centers • Energy use in USA data centers doubled from 2000 to 2006, per August 2007 EPA report to Congress Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
Data Center Energy Use Optimization • Cooling Systems • Relax environmental condition requirements • ASHRAE recommended range: 68 to 77 °F, 40 to 55 % relative humidity • ASHRAE allowable range: 59 to 90 °F, 20 to 80 % relative humidity • Adjust room temperature and humidity settings seasonally • Raise temperature of chilled water supply • Install variable speed control for fans, chillers and pumps • Effectively segregate air streams • Maximize “free” cooling opportunities • Install plate and frame heat exchangers • Air side economizer • Install water cooled equipment and racks • For an equal volume water can remove 3600 times more heat than air Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
Data Center Energy Use Optimization • Power Systems • Install high efficiency UPS and substations • Promote use of higher voltage DP equipment • Lighting systems • High efficiency lamps / low watt/sf design • Lighting control systems / automatic shut-off • Operations • Install energy monitoring systems / Detect anomalies • Recommission infrastructure systems periodically • Integration of IT and facilities equipment control systems • Capability to modulate cooling supply to match equipment demand Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
Data Center Efficiency, DCE IT equipment power Total data center power • DCE is a metric defined by GreenGrid = • Ave. DCE today ~ 0.5 • ‘08 IBM Data Center • Summer = ~ 0.7 • Winter = ~ 0.85 • Energy efficiency increase of ~ 50% in cooling & power supply systems LBNL: Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
IT Equipment Energy Performance Metrics Use of high performance IT equipment with optimization of facility systems effciency allows computing capacity to double without increasing total data center power requirement Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
Environmental Impact Reduction Technologies • Construction waste recycling • Regional and/or recycled content materials • “Green Label Plus” carpet • Highly reflective or vegetative roofs • Water conservation techniques • Ultra low flow restroom fixtures • Rain water harvesting • Grey water and industrial wastewater reuse • Native, drought tolerant landscaping Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
Conclusions • Energy cost is likely to continue to increase • Energy demand and CO2 emissions will increase if aggressive action is not taken • Cost effective “Green” technologies exist • Comprehensive approach to sustainable design, construction and operations can mitigate environmental impact, rising energy demand and cost Green Building Technologies - US Chamber of Commerce
