In this session we will cover… • OLAP cubes basics • Why do we need olap cubes?? • Measures, Dimensions, Hierarchies • Demo.. • Define measures, dimensions etc. • Development environment • Report based on olap cube.
Meeting with the CEO… • CEO: Developer, How much money we made last year? • Developer: $1 billion dollars Sir ! • CEO: • How much did we make per year per quarter? • Which products did well and which failed? • What are the sales by region, country, by year, by quarter etc. etc. etc. • Developer (thinking..) : Hmm.. What is the best way to do this?? :=(
Olap cube basics • Measures • Dimensions • Hierarchies • Levels
Hierarchical Cube… • Route • Non Ground • Air • sea • Ground • Road • rail
Measures and Dimensions.. • Measures • Look at Sales by Customers (Numerical) • Stored in fact tables (physical tables). • Examples: Sales amount, Shipping amount etc. • Dimensions • Look at Sales by Customers • Stored in relational tables called dimensional tables. • Example: Product, Time, Geography, etc. • Contains: Attributes, Hierarchies, and Members.
More on dimensions… • Dimension Attribute: • Table Column • Example: Product dimension, ProdName, ProdColor, etc. • Members • Actual data value in an attribute. • Example: ProdName: Bike, Shirt, Bike Stand, Helmet etc. • Hierarchies • Formed by Attributes. • Contain single or multi LEVELS. Example: Color is single level and Time (Year, Quarter, Month) are multi level
