  1. OFF PAGE ARTICLE ARE ORAL HEALTH AND HEART HEALTH CONNECTED? Dental treatment in mumbai Ever thought that your oral health and heart health could be connected? Well, there is a direct association between the two. Poor oral health make you more susceptible to heart diseases and vice versa. In fact, patients suffering from certain heart conditions need extra precautions and care during dental treatment too. The oral cavity comprises of teeth, gums, tongue, palate and cheeks. Any infection causing bacteria in the oral cavity can spread to other parts of body through the blood stream. Infection can also reach heart and attack the damaged areas of heart and get attached to the area. These bacteria cause inflammation of the weak areas in the heart. Such spread can cause endocarditis (inflammation of the inner surface of heart). Other conditions such as stroke and atherosclerosis are also associated with poor oral health. People with moderate to advanced gum diseases are at higher risk of heart diseases as compared to people without any gum problems. So the maintaining good oral hygiene is very important. Make sure to brush twice a day, floss at least once a day and do not miss your bi-annual dental check-ups. For patients suffering from heart conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or having history of heart attack or heart surgery or on blood thinning medication, special precautions need to be taken before undergoing any invasive dental procedure. These patients are at high risk of bleeding after dental surgical procedures. Your dentist will plan your dental treatment according to your condition, recent disease history and fresh blood test reports. With the consent of your cardiologist, your dentist may have to alter some of your medicines. In case of heart valve derangement or history of valve replacement, antibiotic prophylaxis will be advised to prevent chances of sub-acute bacterial endocarditis. In conclusion, your oral health matters just as much as your heart health and both have need to be given a lot of care.
