About Finding The Right Pet For You Pets form part of most people’s lives, in families often from the time before kids walk. Many grow up with a dog - often a cat – by their side, and that relationship is severed only when the animal dies. Finding the pet that is just right for you and your family is a personal choice and depends on certain factors. Practical considerations are often one. Example, the person or family that live in an apartment with no access to garden spaces are more limited, but nothing stops them (within the rules of the controlling body of the apartment complex, of course) from finding a good little companion, whether that is a cat, which often takes more easily to apartment living – or a small dog such as a Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier or one of the different Poodle breeds. These are all good for apartment living and they accept routines well. Those who live in houses or on farms have a much greater choice since space is not a limiting factor. Dogs have more freedom to play, to run, and bark without causing problems with the neighbors. The same is true for cats that often act independently anyway. This means that one can look at different breeds and the reasons they’re normally preferred and kept. The senior lady may prefer a calm breed, for example, the Labrador Retriever that is a wonderful companion dog for its lovely, loving, and calm nature. The same is true for that other favorite among Americans, the Golden Retriever, which is often mentioned as Favorite Dog of the Year. They are intelligent, loyal, active, and love playing and swimming and other family activities. Families often introduce a pup – also grown, adoptive animals too – into the home when the kids are small. You want a breed that is happy with the little ones and will not snap at them. Some great examples of family dogs come from breeds such as the different spaniels that are known to be playful, loyal, and, at those times that you want them to be, lively. They make great companions for even little kids, provided the grownup teaches the kid respect for the dog, and the dog to accept the kid as a playmate. Terriers make great home pets too, and the Boston terrier has been a great favorite for many years. They are good to adapt to apartment living too, as long as you set aside time for their
daily walk. The same can be said for bulldogs that are happy to go for a walk and the odd game, but they may be more suited to the individual or family that prefers a quieter animal that enjoys your company, that will love you and the kids, but that also enjoys sleeping more than many other breeds. Much like the bulldog, the pug is happy to snuggle up and be given hugs, but some walking and playtime with the kids never go amiss. More easy-to-please and to love breeds for the family and kids include Collies, for example, they are loyal to the end, they adore their owner and their kids and they make wonderful companions. Of course, there are many more, and you choose the one you like best. For those in K-9 services and security activities, choices will differ as those dog handlers and owners are looking for different qualities. They may be more inclined to go for the well-known German Shepherd or the Doberman, the Bloodhound, and certain retrievers too. And then, one specific category that is very popular both as a family pet and working dog, especially during hunting activities, is the Golden Retriever, among some. They are bred to accompany you on wing shooting and to be, at home, loyal pets. For the hunter, for example, they offer great qualities such as being easy to train, they are happy to please and receive the command. Of course, there are so many good dog breeds out there, and it depends, often, on the reason you have a dog: is it merely a family pet, or is it a working dog? Nevertheless, so many choices make it easy to find the one that is just right for you.
