  1. Ear Cropping Procedures For Your Dog Every responsible pet owner makes sure their animal is loved, sheltered, safe, well fed and receives medical care when necessary. Many dog owners in a country like the US – also in a state such as Colorado – take their dogs to the vet for ear cropping, which is popular with many thousands of dog breeders and owners of, often, certain breeds. These are normally the bigger breeds, those dogs that are used as service and guard dogs, either by the forces or, say, security companies. Thousands of dogs that are kept merely as pets at home, also receive the procedure. Bigger dogs are often used as guard dogs, either on someone’s private property, such as their home, or at building sites, factories, sites that may be at risk during, for example, night time or at any other time when criminal activity could be an issue. Where dogs are kept for reasons of protection, it is quite common to see dogs with cropped ears. The reason is quite obvious: these dogs look much more intimidating than those with soft, flopping ears. They look intelligent, watchful and ready to protect their property and people. Of course this serves as a great deterrent for crimes being committed. This is why so many guard dogs, or those you see accompanying their trainers and handlers, with cropped ears. They would make a criminal think twice before they act. Think of breeds such as Doberman Pinschers, Boxers and certain terriers, for example Staffordshire terriers and American Pit Bulls. But it goes beyond dogs that look after property or are used for duty. Ear cropping is often used to protect the animal’s ears too during, for example, dog fights when it can happen that flopping ears can be the perfect place to grasp – and tear. It is not impossible that a dog can lose an ear during such a fight. If, however, the ears were cropped, chances are that the injuries would have been less severe. Another reason many dog owners have ear cropping performed on their dog is actually health related: dogs with droopy ears develop ear infections much easier than dogs with upright ears, such as those being cropped. This does not mean, however, that every dog on earth must receive the ear cropping procedure, but in certain bigger breeds it certainly may be advised. Some people also feel that cropped ears may improve the animal’s hearing. Many dog owners approach their veterinarian to have this procedure done. It is important to deal with an experienced vet and animal hospital so that the procedure is performed correctly and the desired results achieved, whether you live in San Francisco, CA or Boulder, CO – or in Greeley and nearby regions. Always deal with experienced professionals who know how to perform the procedure so your animal shows off the right look. The procedure itself is normally carried out on young pups, when they are around 8 – 12 weeks old. It should also be done under general anesthesia. If you wait too long, it may mean the ear’s cartilage has started to take on a more permanent shape, making the procedure much more difficult. The veterinarian’s procedure includes measuring of the ears, then the cropping and afterwards suturing to help the affected area heal. A good vet wants to know that the pup does not suffer pain and a lot of discomfort; therefore they will take care with the procedure, bandaging afterwards and making sure the owner brings the pup in for follow-up visits, during which visits he/she will check the ears to make sure they are healing. After enough time the suture will be removed. When performed by knowledgeable, experienced vets, ear cropping can create the effect the owner has brought the animal in for.
