Looking after your Pet’s Diet is a Huge Responsibility Pets are not only cute and lovable – they are also one of the biggest responsibilities in our lives the moment we commit to taking them into our homes. They are always cute when they’re very small, but as they grow older they change, much like humans and become less playful and huggable. But, they are with us and we love them because we see them as an extension of the human family in our home. They deserve our love and our care, our protection and our loyalty. We provide for them in terms of a safe space, in terms of playing with them, taking them for exercise, making sure the vet is there for them when they are unwell – and we feed them. Feeding is, just as it is for humans, important to keep them happy and healthy and generally well. Also, dogs and cats need to be fed according to their breed, their size, their age, and their general profile. It remains the owner’s responsibility to know what the best foods for their pet are, and to this end, one has to read up, talk to experts such as breeders, and the local vet. At the vet’s rooms, there will always be a vet, a nurse, an assistant with good information as to what one has to look out for when buying food for one’s animals. Let us consider some of the following points as a basic guideline: Always choose high-quality foods, and when you’re out shopping make sure that you pay attention to labels. It is always a good piece of advice to look for a so-called complete feed, which information packaging often carries. It means that you choose the best food for the breed and its age. Make sure you know what the ingredients are in the foods you buy for your pets. A well-balanced diet for dogs and cats should include, at least,
a good source or two of protein. Also, mix it up: at times feed them chicken, at other times beef, for example. Remember too that younger pets may need more protein than an old pet that no longer grows or moves around a lot. Protein is especially good for muscle growth and keeping muscles strong and healthy. Always look at serving size. Do not overfeed. It leads to obesity, a lazy animal and, often, to health issues. Talk to the vet or other experts to establish what the best serving sizes are according to the cat’s, or the dog’s, breed, age, and size. Babies need different food from those you feed to adults and seniors, as their needs are different. Younger pets need more protein, and older dogs, for example, may have to be fed foods that aid joint health, as an example. So, as they age, their diet must be adjusted, and the owner has to find out from the vet and others that specialize in animal health care – such as nutritionists – what the best diets for their pets are. Treats – be careful. Our pets know how to tug at our heartstrings and make us feel guilty. Avoid the trap of feeding them too many treats as it is not always good for their health. Keep a healthy balance, and also remember it may not be a good thing to feed your animal what you eat, so do not get them used to eat from your table, whether those are scraps or the food you cook for you and your family. Pet food that you buy in pet health care shops – or from your vet – is specially formulated to ensure the best balance, and ultimately the animal’s health.
