Treatment Regimen • Begin between 2nd-5th day of menses • Patient to take 1 or 2 tablets (50-100mg) every day for 5 consecutive days • Can induce menstrual cycle w/ progesterone injections or progestin tablets. • Pregnancy test before inducing
Drug Action • Name: Clomid, Serophene (Clomiphene Citrate) • Target Cells: Estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus • Cellular Response: Anti-hormone, competitive inhibition • Effect: Block estrogen receptors in hypothalamus to cause increased release of GnRH, LH, and FSH, leading to increased estrogen and ultimately ovulation.
Effect of reproductive state • Effective: • Early in cycle (2-5 days of menstration) • Can induce period (progesterone) • Not Effective: • Times other than above • Women who cannot cycle • pregnant
