Gestalt Therapy - Godly Therapy or Worldly Way?
Slide 2:Introduction
Philosophies of men and other ideas opposed to Bible truth have long existed. Act 17:18 KJV: “Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans1, and of the Stoicks2, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.” These philosophies have attacked the church from without and crept within the Lord’s church in the past. If we are not vigilant, they will do the same today. These lessons deal with sinful philosophies, teachings, behaviors and activities of one very influential and public member of the Lord’s church. It is NOT a warning of some future event in a land far, far away. It is designed to inform the hearer of something happening here, NOW, in this country. 1Epicureans – Disciples of Epicurus, B.C. 342-271, who abandoned as hopeless the search by reason for pure truth, cf. John 18:38, seeking instead true pleasure through experience. 2Stoicks – (Stoics = "of the portico") Disciples of Zeno of Citium, B.C. 280, and Chrysippus, B.C. 240. This philosophy was founded on human self-sufficiency, inculcated stern self-repression, the solidarity of the race, and the unity of Deity.

FIRST: Religious humanists regard the universe as self-existing and not created. SECOND: Humanism believes that man is a part of nature and that he has emerged as a result of a continuous process. THIRD: Holding an organic view of life, humanists find that the traditional dualism of mind and body must be rejected. FOURTH: Humanism recognizes that man's religious culture and civilization, as clearly depicted by anthropology and history, are the product of a gradual development due to his interaction with his natural environment and with his social heritage. The individual born into a particular culture is largely molded by that culture. FIFTH: Humanism asserts that the nature of the universe depicted by modern science makes unacceptable any supernatural or cosmic guarantees of human values. Obviously humanism does not deny the possibility of realities as yet undiscovered, but it does insist that the way to determine the existence and value of any and all realities is by means of intelligent inquiry and by the assessment of their relations to human needs. Religion must formulate its hopes and plans in the light of the scientific spirit and method. SIXTH: We are convinced that the time has passed for theism, deism, modernism, and the several varieties of "new thought". SEVENTH: Religion consists of those actions, purposes, and experiences which are humanly significant. Nothing human is alien to the religious. It includes labor, art, science, philosophy, love, friendship, recreation — all that is in its degree expressive of intelligently satisfying human living. EIGHTH: Religious Humanism considers the complete realization of human personality to be the end of man's life and seeks its development and fulfillment IN THE HERE AND NOW. This is the explanation of the humanist's social passion. NINTH: In the place of the old attitudes involved in worship and prayer the humanist finds his religious emotions expressed in a heightened sense of personal life and in a cooperative effort to promote social well-being. TENTH: It follows that there will be no uniquely religious emotions and attitudes of the kind hitherto associated with belief in the supernatural. ELEVENTH: Man will learn to face the crises of life in terms of his knowledge of their naturalness and probability. Reasonable and manly attitudes will be fostered by education and supported by custom. We assume that humanism will take the path of social and mental hygiene and discourage sentimental and unreal hopes and wishful thinking. TWELFTH: Believing that religion must work increasingly for joy in living, religious humanists aim to foster the creative in man and to encourage achievements that add to the satisfactions of life. THIRTEENTH: Religious humanism maintains that all associations and institutions exist for the fulfillment of human life. The intelligent evaluation, transformation, control, and direction of such associations and institutions with a view to the enhancement of human life is the purpose and program of humanism. Certainly religious institutions, their ritualistic forms, ecclesiastical methods, and communal activities must be reconstituted as rapidly as experience allows, in order to function effectively in the modern world.

FOURTEENTH: The humanists are firmly convinced that existing acquisitive and profit-motivated society has shown itself to be inadequate and that a radical change in methods, controls, and motives must be instituted. A socialized and cooperative economic order must be established to the end that the equitable distribution of the means of life be possible. The goal of humanism is a free and universal society in which people voluntarily and intelligently cooperate for the common good. Humanists demand a shared life in a shared world. FIFTEENTH AND LAST: We assert that humanism will: (a) affirm life rather than deny it; (b) seek to elicit the possibilities of life, not flee from them; and (c) endeavor to establish the conditions of a satisfactory life for all, not merely for the few. By this positive morale and intention humanism will be guided, and from this perspective and alignment the techniques and efforts of humanism will flow. A Question – Are humanistic principles in accord with or opposed to New Testament principles? THE BIG QUESTION – Given what you now know, can a Christian embrace or participate in humanism or ANY philosophy, behavior, or activity that uses humanistic principles, without committing sin?

Although Gestalt therapy may exist in other places within the Lord’s church, the most well known and visible place it exists today is in Austin, TX. Doctor (brother) Joseph Meador, M.S., Ph.D., the current Director of the Southwest School of Bible Studies, is a practitioner of Gestalt therapy as well as other ungodly philosophies. The following slides will provide evidence showing this to be a fact.

The Hutchins Institute for Educational Research (HIER) Joseph Meador was the founding director of HIER His secular education “… focused on the philosophy of two men, “Robert Hutchins and Mortimer Adler.” (Col 2:8) He holds membership in two religious or quasi-religious organizations, “the American Academy of Religion and the Religious Education Association.” (Rom 12:2)

The American Academy of Religion (AAR) They say of themselves, “The AAR neither endorses nor rejects any religious belief or practice.” Is that the way Jesus reacted to false religions and false doctrines in His day? (Mat 15:9) There is no hint that brother Meador has rebuked or reproved any of these pluralistic associates in any way. (Eph 5:11; 2 Tim 4:2; Jam 4:17)

This form of perennialism contains the humanist tradition…” Humanistic Psychotherapy (quotes from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) “Another body of thought in psychotherapy started in the 1950s with Carl Rogers. ... The works of Abraham Maslow and his hierarchy of human needs became his main focus of concentration. By the early 1930s he had finished his doctoral work and had brought Person centered psychotherapy into mainstream focus. Rogers' basic tenets were unconditional positive regard, genuineness, and empathic understanding, with each demonstrated by the counselor. According to Rogers, these tenets were both necessary and sufficient to create a relationship conducive to enhancing the client's psychological well being, by enabling the client to fully experience themselves. Here we find that brother Meador has advertised that appointments for clients of HIER are “Scheduled and Conducted” at his office at the “Southwest School of Bible Studies.” In simple terms, someone could go to 8900 Manchaca Road in Austin, TX and walk in to brother /Doctor Meador’s office on the grounds of the Southwest church of Christ. Depending on the individual’s desires, he could see brother Meador to enroll in the Southwest School of Bible Studies to study the scriptures OR have an appointment with Doctor Meador to receive some sort of Gestalt Therapy or other humanistic psychotherapy.

Brother Meador now teaches and practices Anandamaya yoga in addition to Gestalt therapy. Anandamaya yoga is a form of inner-contemplation which takes its teachings from an ancient Indian philosophy known as Samkhya. Although the German Gestalt therapy and the more middle-eastern yoga have differing roots, one thing remains the same, by using them brother Meador continues to appeal to men to look within themselves to fix their own problems and reduce stress, rather than looking humbly toward to their God and seeking Him through His word.

The man teaching these philosophies is the Director of Southwest School of Bible Studies, Austin, TX, one of the largest schools for training preachers operated by brethren. Given the foregoing documentation of brother Meador’s philosophical and religious partnerships, can one have confidence in the school he directs to produce graduates who are sound in the faith? Do you want these graduates teaching your children and/or grandchildren what they have learned at the feet of Doctor (brother) Joseph Meador? (Note: Brother Meador is Vice-President of the Board, The Gospel Journal, Inc., and is an alumnus of Memphis School of Preaching.) These philosophies were operating undetected within his congregation, apparently for years. If it can happen at the Southwest congregation it can happen elsewhere. Don’t believe your congregation is immune to this or a similar error! 1 Co 10:12 KJV: “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”

Those in the world who know Brother Meador is a member of the Lord’s church and who also know he is associated with the Gestalt Institute of Austin (GIA) probably will confuse the church of Christ with the denominations based on the advertising being run by the GIA. Impenitent sin sin should always cause faithful brethren to mourn (1 Co 5:2). Even though these things happen elsewhere, faithful Christians should mourn the damage done to the body of Christ. Brother Meador is a high profile, well traveled, well published individual. What he says has the potential to be influential, especially to new Christians and those weak in the faith. -2 Co 11:14-15 KJV: “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. (15) Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”
