Distribution of HPAI (H5N1) in Europe in the first half of 2007
Turkey 2006 2007
Conclusions • Recent resurgence of HPAI subtype H5N1 has been observed mainly in countries that had been previously affected and that had eradicated the disease • Four countries have been newly affected in 2007 • The number of reported cases in wild birds has dramatically decreased in 2007
Conclusions • Most of the countries that had eradicated the previous introduction of the disease or that are newly affected are now better prepared for the early detection of and rapid response to new outbreaks • Stamping out or vaccination have been used as control strategies and have given good results in many countries where it has been properly applied in a timely manner
Conclusions • Human cases have only been detected in countries where the disease has been reported in animals • The presence of endemic disease in a few countries constitutes a permanent source of potential contamination for humans in these countries and could also be a source of animal and human contamination for other countries, through illegal movements of animals for example
