Fantasy An Introduction
Definition: • Usually a story in which a reality other than normal reality is used • Uses elements like magic, unreal or mythical creatures, and the Quest • Often a different world and/or time frame exists
Fantasy • Magic • Supernatural • Extraordinary worlds like Oz, Fairyland, or Hogwarts
Speculative or Science Fiction • Science advanced far beyond the current time • Other planets, inhabited or not • Space or time travel as common as riding a school bus around the universe
Horror • Suspense caused by existence of supernatural monsters like hungry zombies • Fear created by frequent and grisly bloodbaths committed by creatures like vampires, Freddie, Jason, werewolves, and ghosts
Examples of Fantasy • A different reality as in Science Fiction
A world that has unreal or mythical creatures
Characteristics • The world obeys different rules from real life like animated and thinking trees, winds, waters, rocks, and dead people • Magic works • Mythological beings, monsters, and creatures walk the earth • All characters accept the reality of the world, whatever it is like • Often, a hero or heroine prevails
Conclusions • Fantasy exists in many different forms • Each type continues to be popular today • Some forms scare us so that we can be cleansed of real life fears since we know we will survive just like the hero • We read and listen to fantasy stories and watch fantasy movies for entertainment to make us laugh, scream, or tremble
The End Or is it?
