What is stress? • Stress is the emotional and physical response to pressure • Can be good or bad • Good : adrenaline is an example of good stress • Bad: feeling stressed all the time is an example of bad stress
Emotional Symptoms of stress • Tension • Irritabillity • Inability to concentrate • Feeling tired • Insomnia • Sense of isolation • Moodiness • Constant worrying
Physical symptoms • Headaches • Increased heart rate • Digestive problems • Aches and pains • Increased sweating • Poor circulation • Weakened immune system
Behavioural Symptoms • Loss of appetite and overeating • Substance abuse • Paranoia • Lack of interest in things • Feeling out of control • Increased smoking/ caffeine intake • Memory problems • Poor judgement
Coping with stress • Meditation and exercise • Splitting tasks into smaller more manageable goals • Avoiding excessive caffeine and other substances • Giving yourself a break • Talking about your problems with others

For boys approximately • 25% avoided or refused to deal with their stress, • 23% sought ways to distract themselves away from their stress, • 17% sought support, and • 35% actively tried to reduce their stress. • On the other hand, when it came to the girls, approximately • 19% avoided or refused to deal with their stress, • 14 % sought ways to distract themselves away from their stress, • 22% sought support, and • 45% actively tried to remove or reduce their stress.
When its not just stress... • Excessive stress can cause some of the following things: • Eating disorders • Substance addictions • Depression • Anxiety disorders • Chronic insomnia
Warning signs that it’s not just stress -Lack of communication -Traumatic events that are too much to deal with -Extreme weight loss or weight gain -Isolation -Constant feeling of uneasiness and not knowing why
Mental Health We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. The ability to feel, think and act in ways that help us enjoy life and deal with any challenges we face.
DepressionSigns and Symptoms • Depressed mood or sadness most of the time • Lack of energy or fatigue • Inability to enjoy things that used to bring pleasure • Withdrawal from friends or family • Irritability, anger or anxiety • Inability to concentrate • Significant weight loss or gain • Significant change in sleep patterns • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness • Pessimism or indifference (not caring about present or future) • Thoughts of death or suicide • Other warning signs (skipped classes, extreme feelings of ugliness or eating disorders may be unrecognized depression)
AnxietySigns and Symptoms In addition to those listed for stress: • Increased Heart Rate (sometimes pounding) • Increased Breathing Rate (sometimes short of breath) • Sweating palms • Lightheaded/dizziness • Numbness, tingling • Stomach aches • Avoiding school, people or situations as a result of intense, unrealistic fears or worries
How to Help • Notice out loud • Listen to your teen • Help them label their emotions • Help your teen think of things to do (such as those listed on previous slide) • Limit stress where possible • Just be there • Encourage regular school attendance • Talk to teachers or school staff to get a clear picture • Get help if symptoms persist • If you suspect your teen may act on thoughts of suicide, get help immediately. Go with them to the emergency department or call 911.
