Jonathan and David Make a Friendship Covenant • I Samuel 18:1-4 • 1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. • 2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house. • 3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. • 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

Jonathan Keeps Friendship with David • I Samuel 20:1-4 • 1 And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life? • 2 And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so. • 3 And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death. • 4 Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.

Jonathan Protects David • I Samuel 20:41-42 • 41 And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded. • 42 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.

  5. Building Deep, Lasting, Godly Friendship • Romans 12:10 • Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; • 1. To share faith in Jesus Christ with your close friend • 2. To share interests with your close friend • 3. To seek to meet your close friend’s needs • 4. To protect your close friend • 5. To have a confidence with your close friend

  6. Building Deep, Lasting, Godly Friendship • Ephesians 5:21 • Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. • 6. To serve your close friend gladly • 7. To forgive your close friend freely and quickly • 8. To accept criticism and praise from your close friend • 9. To develop your friendship with your close friend based on scriptural principles • 10. To take time to build friendship with your close friend
