part symbol • Use for an assembly (german: Zusammen-bau = ZSB) or a component. material symbol • Use for materials. These can consist of basic substances or other materials. Structural tree: Symbols • Use for semicomponents (= "semifinished" parts) e.g. metal sheet coils, textiles (role products), solders, adhesives, lubricants. semicomponent symbol basic substance symbol • Use for basic substances. These must be subordinated to a material.

Material consisting of basic subst. Note: Basic substances must be sub- ordinated always to the last material level. If a material consists of superior and sub materials basic substances only can be appended to the sub materials.
Basic Substances Definition of Basic Substances Chemical elements or compositions used to describe a material completely. Use of Basic Substances • Basic substances only can be selected frome the substance list in IMDS. • Missing basic substances can be included into the list over the IMDS • service‘s center. • Basic substances only may follow the last material level. Special Cases • Confidential Basic Substances -> see page 6 • Jokers (wild card)-> see page 7
Confidential Substances Definition of Confidential Substances Confidential substances are substances, which only can be seen by a name be-knew group of IMDS users to protect the supplier‘s secret of formulating materials. The standard IMDS user cannot see the confi- dential substances in the MDS because these are masked. Notes for Use • Substances listed in VDA 232-101 cannot be masked (no confidential • substance). • Jokers may never be declared as confidential substances. • A material can at most consist of 10 % confidential substances. In • case of exception is required, deviations have to be regulated in • mutual agreement. ? with whom? Factory Government?
Jokers Definition of Jokers • Jokers are dummies for • substances, which are unknown at the moment, • substances, which do not have to be specified exactly. Permitted Jokers • Jokers with no Temporal Restrictions • „Mineral material“ (e.g. mineral powder, ash content) • „Organic Ingredients“ (e.g. wood, leather, plant fibres) • Temporary Joker • „Misc. (Miscellaneousness)“ Dummy for data which aren‘t • available up to initial sample report, initial sample test rating „3“, • missing data have to be delivered within 3 months.
Material name most possible as a standardized short name - metals acording to steel iron list, if listed there - plastics according to ISO 1043 - elastomers according to ISO 1629 Name Trade names may only be filled in this data field, required data field for elastomers for clear material identification Tradename Materials Material No. Required data field for steels according to DIN EN 10027-2 Symbol Material identification for recycling purposes according to VDA 260 Material classification for recycling purposes according to VDA 231-106 Classification Norms/Standards Data field for national and international norms/standards Inhouse Norms Data field for Volkswagen-norms Remark Data field for further remarks
Seat cover textile thread ... ... ... Semicomponents Use of semicomponents during MDS creation Example: You are creationg a material data sheet for a seat cover. Your pre-suppliers have sent you semicomponent MDS for textile and thread. The seat cover is to be declared with a part symbol. The part must have a Volkswagen part number with the color code at the end. The semicomponent MDS of the pre-suppliers are appended to the part symbol. They must have semicomponent-numbers to describe the material and the color clearly, e.g. TPD 8M3 *). The reference to Volkswagen inhouse norms must be available in the MDS of the pre-suppliers at the material level. *) (TPD = material reference code / 8M3 = color reference code)
Parts Use of parts during MDS creation • Absolutely necessary data to describe the part • for all MDS sent to IMDS / Volkswagen: VW part number according • to VW 01098 • only one part number for each MDS, that means separate MDS for • „left hand“ and „right hand“ parts • part name as written in Volkswagen technical drawing • weight
DC01; St2, St12 Surfaces Use of surfaces during MDB creation holder Surfaces are to be declared as a material by the pre-supplier. In the structural tree for the surface a semicomponent symbol is added. To be able to recognize the type of surface automatically, Volkswagen needs the name of the semicomponent according to VW 13750, e.g. „Ofl-r650“, Ofl=short for surface (german: Oberfläche). The material MDS of the pre- supplier is appended to semicomponent symbol. The reference to Volkswagen inhouse norms must be available in the MDS of the pre-suppliers at the material level. - carbon manganese phosphorus sulphur iron Ofl-r650 - chromated, yellow - zinc chromiumVI chromiumIII cobalt
hot-rolled strip, pickled Temporary Corrosion Protection Use of Temporary Corrosion Protection during MDB creation reinforcement left, axle mounting Temporary corrosion protection is used for metal parts (e.g. sheet metals). It will be removed by Volkswagen from surface in steps of processing following later. To be able to recognize the type of surface automatically, Volkswagen needs the expression „corrosion protection temp.“ as the name of the semicomponent. The material MDS of the pre-supplier is appended to semicomponent symbol. The reference to Volkswagen inhouse norms must be available in the MDS of the pre-suppliers at the material level. - carbon silicium manganese sulphur phosphorus aluminium iron corrosion protection temp. - corrosion protection oil - basic substance 1 basic substance 2 basic substance 3 ...
ZSB gear box casing casing cover gear box oil XYZ ... gear box oil XYZ ... Fuels and Lubricants Use of Fuels and Lubricants during MDS creation Fuels and lubricants are to be declared as a semicomponent by the pre-supplier. In the structural tree you have to add a part symbol for fuels and lubricants. If there exist a Volks- wagen part number (N 052 ...) please write it in the data field for the semicomponent name. The material MDS of the pre-supplier is appended to semicomponent symbol. The reference to Volkswagen inhouse norms must be available in the MDS of the pre- suppliers at the material level.
