  1. Rack ‘Em Up!! Project by Walt Staton May 7, 2003 For A. Curtis’s GIS class A brief look at bike racks on LSU’s campus

  2. Overview… • Currently, LSU has a little over 100 bike racks on campus • On an average day, there are about 350 bikes on campus • According to the Master Plan, 11% of students ride their bikes now • If bike lanes were created, 36% of students said they would begin to ride a bike to school Are there enough racks? Are they in the right places?

  3. Where are they now? Pentagon Bike Rack Locations 0 – 10 bikes 11 – 20 bikes 21 – 40 bikes Library Union CEBA

  4. Bikes not on racks Library Coates 17 bikes on the rail Lockett Quad Union Un-racked bikes Design 1 - 4 bikes 5 - 9 bikes 10 - 20 bikes

  5. Racks with no bikes Bikeless racks

  6. Campus bike density Where there’s bikes, there’s students

  7. Bike rack density Where there’s racks, there’s not necessarily bikes…

  8. Bike rack density Do the densities for bikes and racks correlate? Upper Quad Rack density Upper Quad CEBA Bike density CEBA

  9. Library Coates Union Design CEBA Are they properly located? It’s best if the rack is within 30 seconds walking-distance from the rider’s destination (about 35 meters) 30 second walk 60 second walk Out of 30-second range

  10. More bikers! According to the campus master plan, there should be a 327% increase in bike riders if bike paths are created.

  11. Bikes per Rack with increase Racks can hold 10 - 12 bikes each, if properly placed - When put against a wall, a rack can only hold 7-8 8 bikes per rack is a desirable target - Allows for unexpected peaks in use

  12. Future problem spots More than 8 bikes per rack

  13. Needy areas Lockett - Allen - Library Coates - Union Dark blue area shows high proportion of bikes to racks CEBA

  14. Relocating racks Add 5+ racks Add 1 - 4 racks No change Remove racks
