  1. VolleyballAttacking (AKA spike) By Kelsey Sheehan

  2. Work as a team of 6 players, using 3 contacts (pass, set, hit) to get the ball across the net to score a point • Each point starts with a serve towards the other opponents’ side of the net • A rally continues until the ball touches the floor, goes out of bounds, a team fails to return the ball to the other side of the net, or a player faults Explanation/ Big Picture

  3. Each match lasts about an hour • Tournaments usually consist of 3 matches per day, which lasts about 6-8 hours (with breaks and refereeing) so about 3 hours of playing • The attack, starting with the approach ending with the landing, lasts about 5 seconds Length of Sporting Event

  4. During a rally in a game an athlete uses anaerobic glycolysis (about 10 seconds) • There can be some really short rallies where only the ATP-PC energy system is used • During an attack the ATP-PC energy system is used Energy Systems

  5. Anaerobic Glycolysis (Rally in Game) ATP-PC (Attack) Anaerobic Highest power output Instantaneous: lasts 3 to 10 seconds Source: Already stored in skeletal muscles. Energy is locked in bonds and “ready to burst.” A high energy bond breaks off ATP and is now ADP + PCr • Occurs without Oxygen so there is a build up of lactic acid • There is a high rate of ATP • High intensity • Enzymatic reactions • Source: glycogen • Glycogen is stored in the liver and muscle Characteristics, Sources, and Energy Storing Molecule (role in creating ATP) of the Energy Systems Used

  6. Each team tries to reach 25 points first (must win by 2 points) per set • College matches are best of 5 sets, 5th set goes to 15 points • High School and club matches are best of three sets • High School: 3rd sets are played to 25 points • Club: 3rd sets are played to 15 points, switching sides at 8 points Scoring

  7. Uniform (for girls) Equipment Volleyballs Netand antennas Boxes are useful for practices Weights, bungee cords, and other training equipment needed to improve performance • Spandex • Jersey/ t-shirt • Kneepads • Socks • Volleyball shoes • Braces if needed • Elbow pads if needed Uniform/ Equipment
