SIGIR Financial Outlook: The Good News • Recent increase in membership • Is it sustainable? • Growth in SIGIR Proceedings Package • But we don’t make money on it • Conferences generally profitable • Usually small profits, but highly variable • Large fund balance
SIGIR Financial Outlook: The Bad News • Declining sales of SIGIR proceedings • Declining interest income • Increasing ACM costs • Increasing student travel & other costs • A good thing, but how do we pay for it? • Unpredictable conference income • Exec Committee has had little control
SIGIR Financial Outlook: Assessment SIGIR is healthy financially, but… • Dues cover less than half our expenses • We rely on conference profits to fund services (e.g., student travel, awards, …) • Conference profits (and losses) vary greatly • Options: • Exec Committee assumes greater control over conference finances • Raise membership dues • Raise publication prices
