Current situation: 94 member establishments in 35 countries 79 faculties either visited or with pending visits 13 Faculties in Italy 3 visited and approved (Bari, Bologna, Torino) 1 visited and conditionally approved (Teramo) 9 pending visits or with major deficiencies (Parma, Padova, Camerino, Milan, Pisa, Perugia, Sassari, Messina, Naples)

The EC-Directive 2005/36 Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications Defines minimum requirements for veterinary training • This is the basis of the • European System of Evaluation of Veterinary Training • managed by EAEVE together with FVE Repealed: Directive 78/1026/EEC and 78/1027/EEC

Old Directive 2005/36 The important issues of the new Directive have been adopted from the old Directive! The training of vet surgeons shall comprise a total of at least five years of full-time theoretical and practical study at a university or ……., or under the supervision of a university covering at least the study programme referred to in the Annex V, point 5.4.1 The distribution of the theoretical and practical training among the various groups of subjects shall be balanced and coordinated in such a way that the knowledge and experience may be acquired in a manner which will enable veterinary surgeons to perform all their duties. New: Stage 1 and Stage 2 Stage 1 is meant to ascertain that the faculty is in conformity with the Directive 2005/36/EEC Stage 2 is meant to ascertain that the faculty fulfils the criteria of quality assurance and plans further quality enhancement (=accreditation)

New: Day-One Skills The evaluation is intended to focus to a larger extent on the knowledge and skills of the new graduates. More details  Annex IV of the SOP

Approved and Conditionally Approved Stage 1: approved means that the establishment fulfills the minimum compulsory requirements for all EU Member States as laid down in EU Directive 2005/36 New: conditionally approved means that no more than 2 unrelated Category 1 Deficiency/ies which is/are of such a nature that it/they can be reasonably expected to be resolved within a 2-year period Stage 2: Accreditation Conditional accreditation

Re-Evaluation Re-evaluation is to be carried out periodically, within 10 years from the ECOVE-decision for the fully approved/accredited faculties. Re-assessment should be within 5 years after ECOVE-decision for conditionally approved faculties.

Member of ENQA The application to become a member of the European Network of Quality Assurance in Higher Education (= ENQA) has been submitted and is in process. Membership is anticipated in the first quarter 2009
