  3. All that gas • Anything with mass has gravity • Clumps of gas (the Big Bang wasn’t exactly smooth) began to fall together

  4. Dust and gas region – The Horsehead Nebula (in Orion)

  5. Dust Clouds with stars forming inside

  6. Dust around a star – a solar system forms

  7. Proto- planetary disks - stars forming planets • In M42

  8. The disk flattens, gas and dust comes together. The star is ON

  9. Star Birth behind dust – M42

  10. Once they turn on, stars push the gas and dust away.

  11. Same beginnings – different focus • Lets do a short focus on the planetary system formation. • We’ll be discussing the planets in more depth later.
