  2. General Information • At one time, China was one of the leading civilizations in the world. • Lead the world in Arts and Science. • China is a Communist country!!!!

  3. 19th and 20th Century Problems • Civil unrest • Major famine • Military decline and defeats • Foreign occupation

  4. Post WWII • Mao Zedong establishes a dictatorship. • Mao : Ensured China’s sovereignty. Imposed strict control over everyday life. Many people died.

  5. Post 1978: • Deng Xiaoping was the successor to Mao. He loosened the vise on the economy and quadrupled the output. • Deng maintained tight political control.

  6. Location: • Absolute: 35* North Latitude, 105* East Longitude • Relative: Eastern Asia. Between North Korea and Vietnam. Borders on East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and the South China Sea.

  7. Place: • World’s 4th largest country!!!! • Area Comparative: Slightly smaller than the U.S.A. • Climate: Very Diverse!!!!! Tropical in the South to Subarctic in the North. • Terrain: Mostly mountains, high plateaus, deserts in the West. Plains, delta’s, hills in the East.
