VOCABULARY REVIEW • Tour • Short trip with a guide • Volunteers • People who willingly do a job without getting paid • Community • Group of people • Thrilled • Very excited or happy • Slogan • Easy to remember phrase • Grownups • Adults • Deserve • Have a right to something • Interviewed • A person who asks questions that someone else asks

STRATEGY: Monitor Comprehension • This means that good readers have to stop and check if they understand what they read. • Good readers also have to stop if they do not understand something • If they are confused, they reread, visualize, read ahead, summarize, visualize, slow down, or ask for help!

  5. SKILL: Author’s Purpose • This is the reason an author writes something. • Authors write to: • Inform: If they want to give facts about something • Persuade: If they want the reader to agree with their opinions or want the reader to take action • Entertain: If they want their readers to think the story is funny, interesting, or suspenseful

  6. PREVIEW & PREDICT When I say “Go”, take 1 minute to preview the illustrations. Ask yourself: • What will the story have to do with a dollar? On your index card, write your predictions. After we listen to the selection, we will see if your questions were answered.

  9. Let’s Check our Predictions! • Share with your criss-cross/shoulder partner your questions. Were they answered? • Did you figure out what the story had to do with a dollar? • How did monitoring your comprehension and figuring out the author’s purpose help you better understand what happened in the story? TOMORROW WE WILL… • Use our “Author’s Purpose Chart to answer the Comprehension Check on page 107.
