  1. PNF STRETCHING Shantanu Sharma MPT Sports Ist Yr

  2. IMPORTANT TERMS Flexibility Stretching PNF

  3. FLEXIBILITY Ability to move a single joint or a series of joints through a complete, unrestricted and pain-free ROM Essential to prevent injuries and maintain function

  4. STRETCHING Any therapeutic maneuver to lengthen shortened soft tissues Agonist: Muscle opposite to the tight muscle Antagonist: Tight muscle

  5. MECHANISM Sustained stretch => sarcomeres added in series Quick stretch => stretch reflex

  6. PNF STRETCHING Help in relaxing only the muscles and not other connective tissue…ligaments, capsules etc. Only possible if the muscle to be stretched is normally innervated and under voluntary control Sarcomere give will occur more easily when the muscle is relaxed

  7. TECHNIQUES Antagonist Contract Relax Hold Relax Agonist Agonist Contraction Hold Relax with Agonist Contraction

  8. PROCEDURE Contract Relax Take limb passively or resist movement of the limb to the limit of ROM Change grip to resist active movement of tight muscle Active contraction of tight muscle in a short range Patient relaxes and limb taken further into the limited range

  9. 2. Hold Relax Take the limb to the limit of ROM Change grip to resist tight muscle Resisted isometric contraction of tight muscle Patient relaxes and limb taken further into the range

  10. 3. Agonist Contraction Take the limb to end range Resisted isometric contraction of muscle opposite to the tight muscle Patient relaxes and limb taken further into the range

  11. 4. Hold Relax with Agonist Contraction Also called Slow Reversal Hold Relax Prestretch isometric contraction of tight muscle and its relaxation Followed by concentric contraction of the opposite muscle Uses both reciprocal and autogenic inhibition

  12. MECHANISM OF PNF STRETCHING Stretching of muscle => muscle spindle stretched => Reflex contraction of muscle Longer stretch => GTO stimulated => relaxation of muscle Autogenic Inhibition: Prestretch contraction => relaxation by stimulation of GTO Reciprocal Inhibition: Contraction of agonist => relaxation of antagonist

  13. PERFORMANCE Hamstrings Biceps Triceps Gastro-soleus Ilio-psoas Hip Adductors
