Schism between Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism • Roman Empire divided between Pope in Rome and Patriarch in Byzantium • Pope and Patriarch Struggled for Power • Pope excommunicates Patriarch • Patriarch excommunicates Roman Catholics • Division is made between Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics.

Division in Islam into Sunni and Shi’a • 7th Century CE – Conflicts between Islamic groups causes great splits in beliefs. • Sunni and Shi’a (Shiite) form • Sunni – believed first 4 Caliphs were legitimate. • Shi’a - believe Muhammad’s son-in-law (or nephew) should have succeeded him directly.
