What is AICP? • International association of permanent race circuits • (Association International des Circuits Permanents) • Founded in Paris on 8 December 1951 with 8 members • Today: 51 members worldwide, growing tendency • Affiliate member of the FIA since 2006 • Associate member of the FIM since 2007 • AICP’s scope is to optimise the utilization of permanent circuits according to the needs of motorcar and motorcycle sporting events, by exchanging ideas and experiences between member circuits, in collaboration with recognized sporting authorities and other relevant organizations.

Position of motor sport venues • Increasing environmental pressure on the society but also on race circuits • Questioning the necessity of motorsport • Cars are the most visual symbol for environmental pollution • Waste of energy and pollution by race cars • Waste of energy by motorsport spectators • Event consists of venue and its content • The racetracks are not in the “driver's seat position” when it comes to developing new alternative energy concepts but racetracks can play an active and strong supportive role for the automotive industry and the motorsport institutions. • Circuits can… • … deliver an environmentally-friendly platform for motor sport events. • … deliver the platform for alternative energy motor sport events. • … promote environmental friendly motor sport concepts and technologies. • … develop attractive new racing formats. • Circuits have to confess themselves to alternative energies and to their environmental responsibility!

7. Environmental management at Nürburgring A managerial task • Environmental protection is of high significance at Nürburgring and plays an integral role in Nürburgring’s entrepreneurial actions. • To this end, Nürburgring started establishing its environmental management system as early as 1996. In 1998, Nürburgring received the certificate for the first time. • EMAS (eco-management and audit scheme) stands for the highest standards of environmental protection for commercial enterprises in Europe. • In order to keep the EMAS-label, Nürburgring has an independent reviewer checking the observation of the relevant legislation and the implementation of the environmental management system within the company in annual audits. • Involving both employees and external companies in the environmental management system is essential for maintaining such a system.

11. Latest achievements Biomass Heating & Power Station On July 21st the new biomass heating and power station at Nuerburgring has commenced operations. The station, which includes a visitor information center for alternative energies, will supply Nuerburgring and all related facilities all year long with power and heat. The wood, as a renewable energy source, originates from regional forests. Partner of Nuerburgring in this project is RWE, one of the largest European energy suppliers. LPG car gas karts At the 2010 DTM weekend, Nuerburgring’s kart racing track has reopened its doors. New: instead of using regular karts, Nuerburgring has teamed up with GreenAutogas so that customers will race around the track with karts powered by LPG car gas. Charging station for e-cars The latest achievement of Nuerburgring: charging stations for E-cars. Directly opposite the main entrance to Nuerburgring, the welcome°center, Nuerburgring has installed 4 stations for E-cars in order to enable e-car drivers to upload their batteries while spending the day at an event (not official in operation yet).

Win-Win Environmental protection can create tangible benefits: • Economic benefits Environmental management allows for cost reduction by means of detecting potential savings and by efficient use of resources. Taking full advantage of these potential savings enhances the company’s economic standing. • Credibility / transparency Don’t only talk about environmental protection, but act accordingly. Particularly in the field of motorsports, this establishes transparency and credibility with customers and partners. • Legal certainty Its pro-active environmental management operations protects against possible future claims.

13. Future Tasks • Develop a best practice framework of Environmentally Sustainable Practices for design and building of motor sport event facilities – both permanent and temporary circuits • Develop a best practice framework of Environmentally Sustainable Practices for the running of motor sport event venues – circuits, incl. karting, and rallies • Develop a standardised protocol for the environmentally sustainable assessment of motor sport facilities and event management • Identify and obtain endorsement for the above Frameworks and Protocols from an internationally accepted body • Develop a methodology for the dissemination of best practice to the ASN’s, facilities owners, and event promoters responsible for running motor sport facilities and events • Enable circuits to react to future challanges – for commercial and ecological sustainability • Provide educational support • Provide financial support, if needed
