  1. Gigabit Ethernet – A Brief History Group 1 Harsh Sopory Kaushik Narayanan Nafeez Bin Taher

  2. Topics to be discussed • What is Ethernet? • Gigabit Ethernet • IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet Specifications • Benefits of Gigabit Ethernet • Project Aims • Immediate Goals • Research Goals

  3. What Is Ethernet? • Most successful LAN technology • Operates at the Data Link Layer (layer 2) of the OSI reference model • Acts as an interface between the MAC layer and transceivers in Ethernet hardware (Physical layer) • Uses contention based medium access protocol – CSMA/CD

  4. Gigabit Ethernet • Builds on top of the Ethernet protocol • Allows data transfer speeds of 1000 Mbps • Provides reliable communication between applications of the Network and Transport layers

  5. 802.3z 1000BASE-CX (short-haul copper) 1000BASE-LX (long-wavelength optics) 1000BASE-SX (short-wavelength optics) 802.3ab 1000BASE-T (twisted pair) 1000BASE-LH (long-haul) IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet Specifications

  6. Benefits of Gigabit Ethernet • Higher data transfer rates • Builds on current Ethernet • Familiar technology • Minimal staff training

  7. Project Aim • Main Issue: Costs associated with opto-electronic module • Project Aim: Cheaper module • Potential Area for Improvement: Alignment Tolerance

  8. Immediate Goals • Set up test bed for future use • Test module on evaluation board to confirm Gigabit transfer rates • Test module with Gigabit Ethernet card to confirm successful data transfer

  9. Research Goals • Widespread deployment of Gigabit Ethernet to homes and residential areas • Potential for developing other services like Video Conferencing
