Structuring An Essay • (Beginning) introduction • Here you set out by defining the key words in the title and set out where you are going in your essay. • (middle) the main body • Here you do the main discussion of your essay 3. (end) conclusion • Here you conclude your essay by making a reason supported judgement.
Question • Discuss the costs and benefits of different groups using a national park
Step 1 find out what the question is asking. There are two arguments to this essay • Discuss the costs and benefits of different groups using a national park Negative outcomes Positive outcomes With reference to different groups.
Step 2 Do an essay plan. • Paragraph 1 • Set out the two arguments you are trying to make in the essay. • Name the groups you are going to be looking at, 3 or 4 groups and state how they use the park. • Paragraph 2 • This paragraph looks at the benefits • Go through each group ( SAME GROUPS AS NAMED IN THE INTRODUCTION) explaining the benefits to the park, support your argument with examples where you can.
Essay plan (continued) • Paragraph 3 • This paragraph looks at the costs • Go through each group explaining the costs to the park & support your argument with examples where you can. • Paragraph 4 conclusion • Here you are trying to conclude the essay. • You need to make a judgement, if overall groups using the park do more harm or good. E.g. Overall tourists benefit a national park more than they harm it. • Give a reason or reasons to support your argument. • Consider each group you have considered in your essay by making an overall conclusion on each one.
