  1. Judges 10:17-18 When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah. The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head over all who live in Gilead.”

  2. 1. Who I go to firstbecomes a great report card for me.

  3. Judges 11:1-2 Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute. Gilead’s wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,” they said, “because you are the son of another woman.”

  4. 1. Who I go to firstbecomes a great report card for me. 2. When the people who are suppose to love and accept me betray me, the emotional scar becomes a powerful force.

  5. Judges 11:3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a gang of scoundrels gathered around him and followed him.

  6. 2. When the people who are suppose to love and accept me betray me, the emotional scar becomes a powerful force. 3. How I respond to fear can be very deceiving, which leaves me very vulnerable.

  7. Judges 11:4-6 Some time later, when the Ammonites were fighting against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. “Come,” they said, “be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.”

  8. Judges 11:7 Jephthahsaid to them, “Didn’t you hate me and drive me from my father’s house? Why do you come to me now, when you’re in trouble?”

  9. 3. How I respond to fear can be very deceiving, which leaves me very vulnerable. 4. One of the ways I recognize my brokenness is when I see people as utilitarian.

  10. Judges 11:8-9 The elders of Gilead said to him, “Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be head over all of us who live in Gilead.” Jephthahanswered, “Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me—will I really be your head?”

  11. 4. One of the ways I recognize my brokenness is when I see people as utilitarian. 5. Saying it doesn’t matter doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter.

  12. Judges 11:10-11 The elders of Gilead replied, “The Lord is our witness; we will certainly do as you say.” So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.

  13. 5. Saying it doesn’t matter doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter. 6. As long as I am in control, I am safe.

  14. Judges 11:29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.

  15. Judges 11:30-31 And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: “If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.”

  16. 6. As long as I am in control, I am safe. 7. I become dangerous when I try and control the Lord, especially when He has already given me what I need.

  17. Judges 11:32-33 Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands. He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.

  18. Judges 11:34 When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of timbrels! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter.

  19. Judges 11:35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, “Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.”

  20. Judges 11:36-37 “My father,” she replied, “you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised, now that the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites. But grant me this one request,” she said. “Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry.”

  21. Judges 11:38-39a “You may go,” he said. And he let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.

  22. 7. I become dangerous when I try and control the Lord, especially when He has already given me what I need. 8. The wounds of the past inform a warped view of God, which caused Jephthah to lean on his ownunderstanding.

  23. Judges 11:39b-40 From this comes the Israelite tradition that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.

  24. Getting Unstuck 1. Respect the power of a childhood wound. 2. Look for the ways that my need for love can turn into lust.

  25. Getting Unstuck 2. Look for the ways that my need for love can turn into lust. 3. Restrain raw words, then look at what they may be attached to.

  26. Getting Unstuck 3. Restrain raw words, then look at what they may be attached to. 4. Reject the wrong god.
