  2. WHAT IS A FLAT? A flat refers to a self-contained housing unit that occupies part of a building. Flats are usually spread across one level, though some may have internal stairs to a loft area. The key defining feature of a flat is that it occupies only part of a building. Flats can vary greatly in size and layout. Studio flats consist of a single room plus a bathroom. On the larger end, flats may have multiple bedrooms, more than one bathroom, a separate kitchen, and living areas. Despite their variability in size, a flat should not take up an entire building.
